6 COUNSELOR CONFERENCE 2015 CA Master Plan for Higher Education specifies: UC offers priority admission to all UC-eligible CCC students The best path to transfer to UC is via the CCC: CCC transfer students vs. 4- year transfer students Strong priority is given to transfers from the California Community Colleges

8 COUNSELOR CONFERENCE 2015 Who is a transfer student? a student who has separated from high school (graduated high school) and has enrolled in any regular term at another postsecondary institution (i.e. CCC, CSU, UC, private in-state & out- of-state, etc.) Who should consider Transfer? any student can benefit from starting his/her path to a UC degree at a CCC students choose the transfer path for many reasons: haven't decided on academic or career goals and want to explore haven't met requirements for freshman admission and want additional academic preparation aren't ready or able to leave home want the affordability of community colleges unsatisfied with four-year originally selected

9 COUNSELOR CONFERENCE 2015 UC Admission Requirements Minimum Units Junior-level standing Minimum Course Pattern Must be completed by end of spring before transfer Two transferable English courses One transferable Math Four transferable courses in two different subject areas Progress towards completion of major preparation coursework by spring prior to transfer Minimum GPA of 2.4 or higher *Selection and additional requirements are dependent upon each individual UC campus

10 How to Prepare for the CCC while in High School

11 COUNSELOR CONFERENCE 2015 Transfer Partnership Transfer is a partnership between high schools, community colleges, and UCs All UC campuses participate in partnerships to raise student achievement and close achievement gaps UC partnerships represent a system wide commitment to work intensively with public schools and colleges that serve the most disadvantaged students

12 COUNSELOR CONFERENCE 2015 Academic Preparation in High School Encourage students to sit in on AP and IB exams Take math all 4-years in HS to score well on the assessment exams Complete early assessments: CSU’s Early Assessment Programs (EAP) exams in English and Mathematics CCC assessment/placement exams Take advantage of concurrent enrollment Enroll in CCC summer sessions following high school graduation

13 COUNSELOR CONFERENCE 2015 The CCC Enrollment Process Enroll in community college on time Submit CCC application Take assessment exams Attend new student orientation Meet with a CCC counselor Register for classes Pay registration fees Join student support services (be aware of these) Apply for financial aid (March 2nd deadline) Complete AB540 Affidavit (as needed) to be charged in-state fees Pay attention (check emails & other notifications)

14 COUNSELOR CONFERENCE 2015 Research Your Options Students are given the same priority for admission at all CCC campuses Not all CCCs offer the same programs or opportunities Some CCCs offer more transferable courses in a major(s) Attend CCC Open House programs

21 COUNSELOR CONFERENCE 2015 On average, CCC students applied to approximately four campuses For Fall 2015, UC experienced slight growth in applications (from 29,311 to 29,736) from students who reported a CCC as their last school attended More than 70% of students who applied from a CCC were admitted to a UC campus Transfer students who come to a UC perform well and have the same opportunities as entering freshmen. Transfer graduation rates are similar to those students who entered UC as a freshmen The average time-to-degree for transfer students is just over 2 years (2.4) after coming to the University (average time-to-degree for freshman is 4.2)
