CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Guiding Questions What are the “Major Clusters” that are being assessed on the NYS assessments? Where in the our units of study have we taught these standards? Have these standards been taught in depth? Are there any gaps? How can we bridge these gaps? 2

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader What are the “Major Clusters” that are being assessed on the NYS assessments? Where in the our units of study have we taught these standards? Use the Cluster Emphasis document form NYS, and check off the standards that are under the “Major Clusters”, and have been taught at your school. 3

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Reflect Have these standards been taught in depth? Did the students get the opportunity to engage in productive struggle, solving word problems that are as rigorous as the ones they’ll see on the NYS assessments? Did majority of the students master the standards based on the classroom assessment data? 4

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Bridging the Gaps Which major standards have not been taught yet? How can we adjust the scope and sequence to address these standards? What do we know about the kinds of questions of the NYS assessments, and how can we embed those kinds of questions in our instruction to provide meaningful experiences for the students? 5

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Planning Identify the key instructional outcomes/standards/clusters Look through the math program that you’re using to find topics/lessons that are aligned to those key standards Analyze the lessons to make sure that these lessons are truly meaningful, and are addressing the instructional outcomes. Identify key problems within the lessons that can be used for problem solving, and can provide students with meaningful learning experiences 6

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Pacing Think about the amount of time you are planning on spending on each of these concepts. How are you planning on assessing progress? Are you planning on dedicating some days for mixed review through problem solving? 7

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Meet with the grade specific teacher teams to plan Please meet with the grade specific teacher teams to plan Use the document to record all your thoughts and planning. All the notes will be compiled and shared with others schools in the network that are using the same math program as your school. 8

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Using the sheet to plan Please take thorough notes that could be shared with other teachers from your school and other schools in the network. If you decide on using a problem from a specific program, or a test prep book, please write down the title and page number of the book. 9 ConceptStandard Resource/Page #

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Key Things to Remember Focus on fewer concepts that can be mastered Do not try to cover everything, teach concepts at a deeper level. Use rigorous word problems, and share multiple ways of solving them Students who are struggling with computations, provide test sophistication strategies, that can help them on the multiple choice part of the test. 10

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Annotated 2013 3-8 Mathematics State Test Questions on Engage NY http://www.engageny.org/resource/new-york-state-common- core-sample-questions These are the questions that have been released by NYS and are intended to help students, families, educators, and the public understand how the Common Core is different. The annotated questions will demonstrate the way the Common Core should drive instruction and how tests have changed to better assess student performance in accordance with the instructional shifts demanded by the Common Core. Please embed these questions in your planning. 11

CFN 204 · Diane Foley · Network Leader Share Highlights of the day Challenges How will you turnkey this information at your school? How will you organize all the work from this year, so that you can use it next year? Questions and Concerns 12
