Rice Paddies and Math Tests
Dylan Berninger Ryan Glans 10/9/14 Period 1
2
Overview This chapter highlights the correlation between the hard wok that it requires to manage a rice field and the effect that it has on a persons ability to work on a task. Chinese children have an early advantage in learning math because they have an ability to hold numbers in their head for a longer period of time Language allows for Chinese students to preform fundamental math without any trouble

Overview (cont.) Math is not something that people have or don’t have it’s an attitude After having students take the Trends in International Mathematics and Science study (TIMSS) a relation was found Relation showed that students who were willing to spend the time to fill out the questionnaire did the best with solving math problems

Something to Think About
While reading this chapter, Gladwell is trying to get you to think about the role culture and legacy play into how successful someone is when it comes to solving math problems and not giving up What I thought about was how can not giving up when working for your life be compared to working on a problem until you get the answer?
5
Something to Think About (cont.)
In the Chinese language the number system is much more simple For example, 39 is “three-tens nine” Why is the U.S. number system more complex than other countries?

Connection: Text to Text
Renee struggles to find the mathematics answer, but because she has the willpower to keep finding the answer she eventually finds it It takes her 22 minutes to find the answer whereas the average high school student only works on a homework question from 30 seconds to five minutes then move on if its too hard I can relate this to “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen because whenever Brian encountered a problem, he didn’t just give up
7
Connection: Text to Self
The nature of their work is meaningful to them The more effort they give the greater the reward I can relate this to myself because if you find something meaningful, you are likely to give more effort I enjoy playing sports so I give as much effort as I can
8
Connection: Text to World
Rice was sold at market to buy other necessities of life Was how wealth and status measured It is the same in the rest of the world where the job you have and how successful you are is how your status is measured
9
Connection: Text to Media
Having the right attitude is more important to master something than ability I related this to the media because in all types of sports its always the people with the right attitude who can make it to the professional level
