CDF Decommissioning Status Jonathan Lewis Master Planning Meeting 9 November 2011
2
Overview PPD is implementing Phase 1 of the DOE-approved decommissioning plan Remove all hazards related to the experimental program Put experimental areas on display to be included in Fermilab’s educational visitor program J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan2
3
3 Scope All hazards related to CDF experimental program mitigated 2nd floor, collision hall and adjacent section of Tevatron tunnel ready for tour groups of ≤49 people West high bay cleared for iARC use East high bay prepared for PPD detector development and construction lab Assembly pit prepared for joint PPD/iARC use Office areas and 1 st floor counting room cleaned and ready as adjunct to PPD activities in high-bay 3 rd floor computer room for CDF analysis servers
4
J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan44 Counting RoomTheatre Stairs to parking lot West Bay-- IARC: Broom Clean Mezzanine Removed 30’ Deep Pit: Cable Bridge Removed East Bay--PPD: Useful hardware recovered Workspaces readied Collision Hall Access to section of Tevatron tunnel
5
J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan5 Schedule October-December Secure detector Recover electronics Cleanout highbays Consolidate/remove cabinets Remove gas racks, motor-generators, etc. December Demolish mezzanines January IARC construction begins No access to west door Recover PMTs, etc. from detector
6
Schedule, cont. March-April Remove cable bridge April IARC tie-in work on north side Begin collision hall work Ongoing Counting room clean-up Remove process systems Life safety improvements for tours IARC integration J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan6
7
Status Systems secured No flammable gas or HV All detector power off Solenoid warm Clean-up in full swing Priority to recover of items useful to other efforts Throwing away CDF-specific items as we encounter them ~30 skids out the door in the past month New lab space for mu2e 2 nd floor work room, main floor welding area Trying to make more space soon to meet demand J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan7
8
8 Gas racks gone Scrap Mezzanine ready for demolition MGs and test magnet ready for removal ! st floor CR being cleared
9
Coordination with IARC Electrical Freeing up experimental power substation Moving conduit for doorway Mechanical Coordinating moves of sprinkler and chilled water pipes for interferences with interconnects, etc. Mezzanine removal Planning (Dervin Allen) Tours for A&E, contractors, etc. Locating utilities, electrical circuits Reduced generator needs during utility work Evaluating access, connections Truck access CDF roof access etc. etc. etc J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan9
10
CDF Building Improvements on D&D Budget Main Stairwell Remove abandoned chilled water pipes Relocate elevator pump 1 st Floor Remove abandoned chillers, etc. 2 nd floor Improve exits Isolate conference rooms and egress paths from assembly area Collision hall Sprinklers Fire doors Exit lighting J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan10

Plans for Display Theatre Place for visitors to assemble Meet scientist? Movie? Trigger room Electronics on display Other displays? Control room Flashing screens look almost like we are running Collision hall North and west sides blown open Plastic covers, view of COT face, etc. South and east, closed up in running configuration J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan12

Display Effort Working with Public Affairs and Education Making posters to document our achievements Mix of hardware and physics Ben Kiliminster coordinating Interactive activities geared mostly toward middle school Cosmic-ray test stand, etc. CDF people: Ben Kilminster, Anna Mazzacane, JDL Life safety improvements in tour areas Doors, walkways Remove obstructions Remove halon, sprinkler mods J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan13
14
J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan14 Planned Collision Hall Layout
15
J. Lewis--CDF Decomminssioning Plan15 Storage of components that may have future use Detector Items They are safe in situ Not worth labor to pull down if no use identified Phototubes, Radeka preamps, etc. Shelf Items Over the years CDF has collected lots of good stuff What you want for a detector lab (fittings, valves, connectors) We will sort to keep what is most generally useful Don’t want building to be a warehouse Plan for storage mezzanines in pit alcoves without crane coverage Sufficient space for all lockers now in high-bay
