 During the new moon, we see the side of the moon that is not illuminated by the sun. When we see the moon, it is like a dark circle in the sky.

6/14/2011  A waxing crescent is sometimes called a young moon. It is always seen in the west after sunset. A small part of the right side is illuminated.

6/14/2011  The first quarter is about 1 week away from the new moon. One half of the moon is illuminated by the sun.

6/14/2011  The waxing gibbous is more than half lit, but less than full. It is the last phase before the full moon.

6/14/2011  The full moon occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth. It is fully illuminated by the sun.

6/14/2011  When the waning gibbous is in the sky, more than half of the surface is illuminated. The waning gibbous occurs a few days after the full moon.

6/14/2011  Three weeks after the new moon, we once again see half of the illuminated part, which is the last quarter.

6/14/2011  In the fourth week, the moon is reduced to a sliver on the left side which is illuminated by the sun.
