2 What is L4L?

3 Learning 4 Life (L4Ling) Librarians teach lifelong learning through the AASL standards. We do this in a lot of different ways. We do this because students desperately need to L4L. L4Ling is essential to prepare students for the 21st Century. Two AASL books can talk you through the nitty gritty of L4Ling: L4Ling is outlined in the AASL Standards for the 21st Century Learner. Building and sustaining School Library Media Programs that promote L4Ling can be learned from Empowering Learners. To follow we have the (very) abridged version.

9 Think 5th Grade Bridge Project Locate and evaluate appropriate sources on bridge types Using reliable, valid information, construct a bridge that will withstand the weight of an average 5 th grader Exemplars Elementary

10 Create 4th Grade Black History Month Videos Locate biographical information about a famous African American individual Create a video “proposal” for that individual’s inauguration into the school’s hall of fame Exemplars Elementary

11 Share 3rd Grade Skype Visit As a group, read a selected novel; develop questions for the author related to the text and author Participate in a discussion about the work with its author Exemplars Elementary

12 Grow 3rd-5th Grades Book Recommendations Write a recommendation for a book you have read and enjoyed Present your recommendation at a school assembly, on the school’s announcements, or on the library wiki Exemplars Elementary

13 L4L Middle School Exemplars

14 Think 6th grade- Intellectual Property Unit/ Research Project Lessons on copyright, creative commons, plagiarism, intellectual property, etc. all year long Apply all of these to the end of the year research project in social studies. Exemplars Middle School

15 Create 8th grade- Persuasive presentation Pairs of students pick a controversial topic. Each student picks a side. After researching, each side gives a presentation with a visual. Students watching have to pick a side and have an justification for their choice. Exemplars Middle School

16 Share 7th grade- Social Networking and community issues Students start a social media campaign based on a need of the community. Research and organization of the material will be done before videos, tweets, or facebook posts are made. Exemplars Middle School

17 Grow 6th-8th Book Trailers Create a book trailer for a book you have read and enjoyed. Present your video on the library circulation system or other social network! Exemplars Middle School

18 L4L High School Exemplars

19 Think 12th Grade Argumentative Term Paper Choose a controversial topic from an online database Research and write a term paper with a thesis statement. Present opposing viewpoints and take a stand on one viewpoint and defend it Exemplars High School

20 Create 10th Grade Picture Book Project In a group, 10th grade students will design a picture book on a science topic to read to 1 st grade elementary students Read and present the books to 1 st graders in an elementary school Exemplars High School

21 Share 9th-12th grade PageTurners Competition Genesee Valley BOCES Literature based competition Encourages and rewards reading skills Exemplars High School

22 Grow 9th-12th grade Library Newsletter and Blog Each semester, students will be chosen to work on the library newsletter and blog Will be distributed online and have paper copies of newsletter Exemplars High School
