Key Objectives in Language Arts Practice with complex texts and the academic language within them Reading, writing, speaking and listening grounded in evidence from texts, both literary and informational Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction
5
Key Objectives in Math Greater focus on fewer topics Coherence : Linking topics and thinking across grades Rigor : Conceptual understanding, procedural skills and fluency, and application with equal intensity Written explanations

Comparison: Content Standards & Common Core Content StandardsCommon Core Standards Language Arts Literary Response and Analysis : Understand that theme refers to the meaning or moral of a selection and recognize themes “whether implied or stated directly” in sample works. RL : Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in a text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects on a topic. Math Mathematical Reasoning : Use a variety of methods, such as words, numbers, symbols, charts, graphs, tables, diagrams and models, to explain mathematical reasoning. Math Practices : Model with mathematics

Comparison: 5 th Grade vs. 6 th Grade Common Core Standards 5 th Grade6 th Grade Language Arts Reading Literacy (RL2) : Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in a text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a power reflects on a topic. Reading Literacy (RL2) : Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details. Math Measurement and Data (MD4) : Measurement volumes by counting unit cubes using cubic centimeters, inches and cubic feet, and improvised units. Geometry (G2) : Find the volume of a rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism.
