© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 3 As you already know, our Leadership Training Forums during year one of ELA are focused on you... what you can do personally to become a better leader. It’s important that we work on ourselves first before we turn our attention to helping those around us improve.

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 4 Today’s forum is all about one of the fundamental building blocks of great leadership: personal discipline. This forum quite naturally ties into the previous leadership training forums on personal integrity and the importance of personal example.

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 7 Anyone who does what he must, only when he is in the mood or when it’s convenient isn’t going to be successful. Nor will people respect and follow him.

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 8 Personal discipline is the habit of consistently doing things that need to be done, regardless of whether you like doing them or not.

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 9 “The one human quality that must be developed for success is self discipline. The willpower to force yourself to do what you know you should do when you should do it, whether you like it or not, whether you feel like it or not. Success is tons of discipline.” Brian Tracy

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 10 The ability to develop self discipline is essential to your success as a leader. This area is perhaps the one where change is most challenging. Personal discipline is developed, not learned. Personal integrity is linked to the ability to develop self discipline.

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 13 Many individuals fail to recognize the importance of process as it relates to personal discipline. They become focused only on results and fail to realize the link between positive results and strong processes. B ARRIERS T O P ERSONAL D ISCIPLINE

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 14 Another barrier to personal discipline is the failure to recognize our control on personal effort, attitude and desire, all of which are needed to develop greater discipline in our lives. B ARRIERS T O P ERSONAL D ISCIPLINE

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 16 Self-discipline can’t be a one-time event; it must become a lifestyle. One of the best ways to begin is to develop systems and routines, especially in areas crucial to your long-term growth and success. This is not something you just do for a season, but everyday for the rest of your life.

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 17 Improving personal discipline should be an ongoing part of your life, an integral part of your personal growth and development. Develop greater discipline in one area of your life and then use that as a stepping stone to progress in another areas.

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 18 “The successful person has the habit of doing the things failures don’t like to do. They don’t like doing them either, necessarily. But their disliking is subordinated to the strength of their purpose.” E. M. Gray

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 19 “That which we persist in doing becomes easier to do. Not that the nature of the thing has changed but that our ability to do has increased.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 20 I MPROVING P ERSONAL D ISCIPLINE Do something every day you don’t enjoy doing (Do what you must so you can do what you want) Learn to prioritize the things you need to do each day, week and month Calendar time to work on priority items Challenge and eliminate any attempt to make excuses

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 21 I MPROVING P ERSONAL D ISCIPLINE On a daily basis look for opportunities that will allow you to develop personal discipline Initiate accountability Select one or more great role models to follow Learn from your mistakes Expose yourself to successful experiences

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 22 I MPROVING P ERSONAL D ISCIPLINE Record the benefits of practicing discipline Spend quality time each week doing non-urgent important things (quadrant II) Do the right things for the right reasons

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 23 D EVELOPING P ERSONAL D ISCIPLINE 1.Identify and list your personal obstacles to living a more disciplined life. 2.Select one barrier you want to overcome, such as “I really like to sleep in,” and develop a simple plan for conquering (or at least better controlling) it.

© U PSTREAM A CADEMY 2011 24 D EVELOPING P ERSONAL D ISCIPLINE 3.List the ways your life would be better if you could develop greater self discipline. 4.Choose one benefit you would like to enjoy (“I would be healthier”) and develop a simple plan for accomplishing it (“I’ll go to bed at 10:30 instead of 11:30, get up a half- hour earlier, and follow an exercise plan I really enjoy.”)
