UNDP and GEF  Most of UNDP’s programmes in the area of Renewable Energy are financed by the GEF  UNDP is one of the 3 Implementing Agencies of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)  Through UNDP project proponents can access GEF funds  UNDP has created regional technical teams that manage GEF funded programmes. For Africa regional UNDP-GEF offices are in Dakar and Pretoria. The Beirut office covers some Northern African countries.

4. UNDP/GEF Portfolio Combines $1.5 Billion GEF grants with over $2Billion in Co-financing to total over $3.5 Billion 5,200 projects in 140 countries (1,000 GEF & 4,200 SGP) Total of $1,538.57 million

UNDP and Wind  Worldwide UNDP’s wind energy portfolio comprises 13 projects at different stages of planning/ implementation  In Africa UNDP currently supports 4 wind energy projects (Eritrea, Morocco, Tunisia, South Africa) at different stages of planning/ implementation. 1 project (Mauritania) has been completed.

6. UNDP’s approach to Wind Energy  UNDP is a co-financier of wind projects  UNDP uses GEF grant money to leverage funds from government, private sector, financial institutions  In line with GEF’s approach UNDP projects aim at removing market barriers so that wind could become a commercially viable alternative  UNDP supported wind projects focus on technical assistance including capacity building, policy and regulatory issues, awareness creation, pre-feasibility and feasibility studies and financing mechanisms
