What are the Marie Curie Actions?  Significant EU fellowships programmes since 1990 (FP3) for researchers ’ mobility  Marie Curie label since 1996 (more than 50.000 fellows to date)  Actions aimed at structuring training, mobility and career development for researchers  Implemented through People Programme (FP7 2007-2013) Pierre and Marie Curie honeymoon, 1895

MCA - Objectives  Develop European human resources in R&D  Stimulate people to enter researcher profession  Retain & attract (incl. return) researchers from around the world  Best practice working and employment conditions, in line with the European Researchers Charter  Support the knowledge triangle by exposing new generations of researchers to both public and private, and equip them with appropriate transferable skills

MCA – main characteristic Some basic about Marie Curie Actions:  Addressed to researchers at all stages of their careers  Open to all domains of research (bottom-up)  Mobility (international, intersectoral, interdisciplinary)  Application through competitive calls for proposals  Selection criteria: S&T quality, Training/ToK, Implementation, Impact  Budget covers generally: salary, mobility and research budget for the researcher

MCA – Freedom of research 2007-2011:  EU contribution of €1870 million  5096 research projects funded  Research topics freely chosen by applicants

MCA – who is funded? 1.Post-graduates ( Early Stage Researchers ESRs) 2.Post-docs Experienced Researchers ERs (Experienced Researchers ERs) 3.Senior Post-docs More Experienced Researchers MERs (More Experienced Researchers MERs) 4.Public & Private bodies 1. Directly after the studies AND less than 4 years of research experience 2. Directly after the PhD OR having more than 4 years of research experience 3. Having more than 10 years of research experience 4. Universities, research organisation, Companies, SME, funding bodies …

MCA – Promoting passionate researchers A unique scheme offering a wide variety of actions For ESRs: Initial training of Researchers Initial Training Networks (ITN) European Industrial Doctorates Innovative Doctoral Programmes For ERs (and MERs) Individual Fellowships Intra-European Fellowships (IEF) Career Integration Grants (CIG) International Outgoing Fellowships (IOF) International Incoming Fellowships (IIF) For Staff Exchange Industry-Academia Partnership and Pathways (IAPP) International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) CO-FUNDING Co-funding of national programmes

 Excellent training environment:  Top research groups  Triple “i” dimension  Supervision and follow-up:  Dedicated supervisor  Careers development plan and monitoring  Transferable skills:  Entrepreneurship and business skills  Intellectual property and patenting rights  Project management  And others… MCA - Excellence in research training  Enhanced through:  Courses/Workshops/Conferences  Secondments  Networking and Outreach

Initial Training Networks (ITN) €1.9 billion in FP7 As an associated country, Moldova will be counted as one of the partners required by the minimum eligibility rule for consortium under multi-ITN or EID. Moldova can also present projects for IDP. Aim to improve career perspectives of early stage researchers in both public & private sector  Multi-partner ITNs - international and interdisciplinary networks of organisations presenting a joint research training programme with strong outreach activities  From 2012 WP – pilot project on European Industrial Doctorates (EID)  Mono-partner ITNs - Innovative Doctoral Programmes (IDP)  About 10 000 researchers to be funded

Multi-ITNs Objectives  Structuring of high-quality initial research training existing in Europe  Equip future generation of researchers with right skills  Improve the employability and career perspectives of ESRs University or Industry University or Industry University or Industry University or Industry Country 1 Country 2 Country 3 MCA initial training

European Industrial Doctorates European Industrial Doctorates Objectives  Develop innovative aptitudes and entrepreneurial mindsets  Improve the employability and career perspectives of doctorate holders  Involve companies in doctoral training  Strengthen the cooperation between universities and companies ≥ 50% University /Laboratory Industry University or Industry Country 1 Country 2 MCA pilot doctoral scheme

Objectives  Innovative training programme addressing the triple ‘i’ dimensions  Equip doctoral candidates with innovative skills (scientific and transferable skills)  Quality and quantity of supervision of doctoral candidates Innovative Doctoral Programmes Innovative Doctoral Programmes University or Research Country 1 University or Industry Industry Other country Other discipline Other sector University or Industry MCA innovative doctoral training

Industry–Academia Partnerships and Pathways (IAPP) ~ €350 Million in FP7 Foster research collaboration between non-commercial (public) research organisations & commercial enterprises  Based on common research project  Intersectoral mobility & skills exchange  Staff secondments (ESR or ER level) & recruitments of experienced researchers (ERs) As an associated country, Moldovan organisations will be counted as one of the partners required by the minimum eligibility rule for IAPP consortium  About 6 000 researchers to be funded

IAPP – win-win for both sectors Industry: Alternative paths to innovation - risk research without the risk Actively directing the research towards the need of the company Identifying commercial opportunities and developing them within the academic environment Acquiring know-how and skilled research staff SMEs in particular: research equipment Academia: Alternative career opportunities Value new generation of researchers appropriately Easier commercialisation of new ideas Increased funding potential through new networks Funded researchers

Intra-European Fellowships for career development (IEF)  Nationals of any country, active in Europe  Mobility in Europe: from a MS or AS to another MS or AS  Personal Career Development Plan  Up to 2 years of funding  New Career Restart panel Life-long Training and Career Development €1.6 billion in FP7 Career Integration Grants (CIG)  Financial contribution of 25 000 €/year (flat rate) during 2-4 years  Host institution in Europe (MS/AC), including country of origin  Research costs, including salary of researchers or assistants As an associated country, Moldovan organisations can host researchers under IEF and CIG

Co-funding of Regional, National and International Programmes (COFUND) Participant rules: Organisations funding and managing a fellowship programme in EU MS or AC  Official public bodies (ministries, academies, councils, agencies, …)  Other public/private bodies (large research organisations, charities, …)  Bodies at international level, running such schemes at European level Eligible researchers:  Experienced researchers  Three types of trans-national mobility: Outgoing: to another MS/AC/TC* Incoming: from another MS/AC/TC* Re-integration: from TC to home MS/AC (after a research stay of at least 3 years) EU contribution:  40% of the fellowship costs for eligible researchers (max. 10 M€ per participant) MCA - COFUND As an associated country, Moldova can present (a) programme(s) for Marie Curie co-funding.
