|8 Why this initiative (1) Board Core tasks university is to deliver know-how and building knowledge networks in an international context Way to improve quality of education Reputation/ branding
9
|9 Why this initiative (2) 6 Pilot programmes (different motives) Reputation/Exposure Additional contribution to knowledge networks Attracting new students and researchers Easy access for students: material is part of a joint degree Preparation for future students Opening up for new connections worldwide; Investing in future learning methods/basis for blended learning

|15 Evaluation pilot phase: set up Google Analytics Feedback forms on the website Interviews with potential users: Lecturers from other institutes Prospective students Companies in the field of drinking water (public sector), offshore engineering (like Shell) and Micro-Electronics (Philips, Texas Instruments)
16
|16 Evaluation Aspects:
17
|17 Evaluation OCW: Results (1) Google Analytics October 2007 – May 2008: 28,000 visits from 23,000 unique visitors (100 visits/day). Going up to > 200 unique visitors/day since May 2008. Visitors from 169 countries / 4196 cities: significant geographical exposure of educational material Materials reused in e.g. Tanzania, Egypt, Netherlands Note: There are more visitors because the material is also published at other websites of the faculties involved (data unfortunately not available).
18
|18 Evaluation OCW: Results (2) General High appreciation of the initiative; Very positive about the quality of the content; TU Delft ‘signature’ is important; Clear website structure Could you also publish courses in the field of ….?? Can we jointly develop courses??
19
|19 Evaluation OCW: Results (3) Interviewees recommendations More information for users about the entrance level required to understand the resources More interactivity & functionalities Create ‘depository’ where users (companies) can upload and publish their own material Communities Self study
20
|20 Evaluation OCW: Results (4) Questions from external users: Updates? How can users can contribute or interact with the university? Services around OCW?
21
|21 Next phase Recent discussions with directors of education TU Delft Keyword: Integrate OCW in regular activities
22
|22 Outline for the second phase until 2010 OCW portal for 3 different target groups: secondary schools Ba/Ma (preparatory courses) Master students/ LLL More functionalities Editorial board Gradual growth in the number of publications PhD-research on OER External Sponsorship
23
|23 1.Challenges: from repository to community Add website functionalities: who else used these resources number of views rating, discussion area.. Link to other university resources (integration) Depository: other people can add content Additional services like customized support/courses, student projects Communities for people who have shared interests
24
|24 2. Challenges: business model Business model: internal Create incentives for publication in university financial model Make clear that OCW can reduce other costs (marketing) Embed OCW in regular educational activities Business model: external External sponsorship Create paid services?
25
|25 Thesis OCW = open innovation => generates knowledge i.e. deserves strong support from universities & governments
