1
Latitude and Longitude A more precise location
2
The Basics a network of imaginary lines or grid allow us to determine precise location of any place on a map or globe. recorded in degrees, or degrees – minutes - seconds (DMS) time can be calculated from degrees
3
Full Circle
4
Longitude
5
North and South Poles which are at the ends of the axis Axis – imaginary line running through the earth from pole to pole on which the earth rotates Point of Reference Prime Meridian – line extending from pole to pole 0˚ -West of PM – Western Hemisphere - East of PM – Eastern Hemisphere
6
The Prime Meridian is the meridian (line of longitude) at which the longitude is defined to be 0°.meridianlongitude
7
Prime Meridian Lines of Longitude/Meridians - Run from North to South and measure distances East and West of the PM
8
Longitude Longitude shows your location in an east- west direction relative to the Greenwich Meridian. Places to the east of Greenwich (such as Middle East, India & Japan have longitudinal angles up to 180 degrees east. Places to the west of Greenwich ( North and South America) have angles up to 180 degrees west.
9
Latitude
10
Latitude Latitude is used to express how far north or south you are relative to the Equator. If you are on the Equator your latitude is zero. If you are near the north pole your latitude is nearly 90 degrees north. If you are near the south pole your latitude is almost 90 degrees south.
12
The Equator - divides the earth into 2 halves - line midway between the poles around the earth’s circumference Lines of Latitude/Parallels - Run East to West and measure distances North and South of the equator
13
The Facts the Earth rotates once every 24 hours there are 360˚ in a circle it takes 24 hours for the earth to make a 360˚ rotation the Earth rotates from West to East 360˚ = 24 hours 15˚ = 1 hour
14
The Tropic of Capricorn The Tropic of Capricorn, or Southern tropic, marks the most southerly latitude at which the sun can appear directly overhead at noon. This event occurs at the December solstice, when the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun to its maximum extent.December solstice Tropic of Capricorn is one of the five major circles of latitude that mark maps of the Earth. It currently lies 23° 26′ 16″ south of the Equator.[1] circles of latitudemapsEarthEquator[1]
