ALL SCIENTISTS MUST KNOW THE LAB SAFETY SYMBOLS!!

ANIMAL SAFETY Handle animals carefully and respectfully.
Wash your hands after handling animals.

CAUSTIC SUBSTANCES If a chemical gets on your skin or clothing or in your eyes, rinse the affected area immediately and call your teacher. If a chemical spills on the floor or lab table, tell your teacher immediately.

CHEMICAL SAFETY Always use caution when working with chemicals.
Never mix chemicals unless specifically directed to do so. Never taste, touch or smell chemicals. Never return unused chemicals to the original container.

CHEMICAL SAFETY Always add an acid or a base to water.
Follow instructions for proper disposal. Never transfer substances by sucking on a pipet or straw. Use a suction bulb.

CLOTHING PROTECTION Wear an apron when working with chemicals.
Secure loose clothing and remove dangling jewelry. Do not wear open-toed shoes or sandals. Notify the teacher if a spill gets on your clothing.

ELECTRICAL SAFETY Never us an electrical appliance when you are near water or when your hands are wet. Be sure to turn off and unplug equipment when you are finished using it.

EYE PROTECTION Wear safety glasses when working around chemicals, flames or heating devices. If any substance gets in your eye, notify your instructor immediately and flush your eye with running water for 15 minutes.

EXPLOSION SAFETY Use flammable liquids only in small amounts.
Make sure no heat sources are present.

GLASSWARE SAFETY Check the condition of glassware before and after using it. Tell your teacher if anything is broken. Do not pick up broken glass with your bare hands.

HAND SAFETY Wear heat resistant gloves when instructed to do so.
If you are unsure of whether an object is hot, do not touch it. Use tongs when heating test tubes. Never hold a test tube in your hand to heat it.

HEATING SAFETY When heating materials in a test tube, always angle the test tube away from your self and others. Know your school’s fire evacuation routes.

PLANT SAFETY Do not eat any part of a plant or plant seed used in the lab. Wash hands thoroughly after handling any part of a plant. When outdoors, do not pick any wild plants.

SHARP OBJECTS Be extremely careful when using knives, scalpels and other sharp instruments. Never cut towards your body.

WASTE DISPOSAL Clean your lab station and personal protective equipment as directed by your instructor.

ALWAYS PROTECT YOURSELF AND YOUR NEIGHBOR!!!
Tell your teacher immediately if you notice a safety issue or if you or your lab partner are injured!!!
