CC-WaterS Protection and improvement of the environment Improve integrated water and landuse management CC-WaterS meets the objective to … … override the constraints imposed by national barriers … foresee future environmental threats and opportunities … develop transnational action for the protection of nature and humans
17
CC-WaterS The impact of climate change on SEES water resources is a critical issue for society, economy and ecology. Challenge The European Environmental Agency (EEA) suggests regional and local projects and studies in order to assess extent of climate change and impact on water resources. The main water supply problems are related to the significant change of groundwater quantity and quality, which have been observed in the last decades as an effect of land use practices, and are related to climate change.
18
CC-WaterS to safeguard water availability and safety for a sustainable water supply for citizens in different European regions for several decades in the future under the influence of climate change, also provoking land use changes Main objective is … to develop methods in order to predict direct or indirect land use change impacts on water supply to develop measures in order to adapt to those impacts and to support sustainable water supply management
19
CC-WaterS to identify and apply an adequate model in order to quantify climate change on catchment scale to analyse water balance alterations resulting from climate change and future land use demands Specific tasks are … to evaluate anthropogenic (land uses) and natural impacts (climate change) on water supply availability and safety to determine drinking water availability under conditions of climate change and land use
20
CC-WaterS to develop common tools for risk assessment in order to secure drinking water supply under changing climate conditions to develop appropriate technical measures and propose legislative adaptations to mitigate possible negative effects of climate and land use changes on water supply management to assess socio-economic aspects resulting from those adaptation measures Specific tasks are …
21
CC-WaterS comprehensive and comprehensible handbook of management measures, aiming to support water suppliers, spatial planners and development agencies in coping with impacts of climate change on public water supply, based on scientific findings, tested on catchment scale it will help executive governmental institutions and policy decision makers for adaptation to future water demand and supply Main output of the project
22
CC-WaterS develop a water supply management system regarding optimisation of water extraction and land use regulations under climate change scenarios for water suppliers in South East Europe share experience in South East Europe region, raise awareness in the wider public and promote a common approach towards sustainable transnational water management promote project achievements and propose measures to water suppliers, local authorities and other selected target groups Partners
23
CC-WaterS CC-WaterS supports Lisbon and Gothenburg strategy for sustainable social, economic and ecologic development and further EU cohesion Consistency with EU policy on environmental sustainability CC-WaterS meets requirements concerning knowledge about climate-induced changes in the water cycle CC-WaterS provides efficient adaptation strategies for water supply, referring to latest developments on European level
24
CC-WaterS …... makes an important contribution to active protection of the resource water... promotes European co-operation and intensifies the transnational exchange of knowledge and experiences.... actively raises awareness about climate change, land uses and water cycle.... provides the basis for sustainable management practices in the fields of climate change, land use and water supply
