Why is our school the “Pirates” Were there “good” pirates? What does Swansboro have to do with pirates? Will you be a good pirate this school year?

There are different words used to describe pirates. Pirates had different purposes for what they did depending on the word used.

Pirate: An act of robbery on the high seas for personal gain.

Privateer: An act of robbery on the high seas for the good of a nation.

Buccaneers: Run away sailors and deserters that operated on the Caribbean Sea.

The first settlement in Swansboro was in 1730 at the White Oak River. The port at Swansboro became well know with the ship builder, a privateer, Capt. Otway Burns. He docked his ship, The Snapdragon, at the Swansboro Port and conducted a ship building industry in Swansboro.

Capt. Burns served as a privateer in the War of 1812. The War of 1812 was fought between the US and Britain. It confirmed American’s independence from England. He destroyed and captured millions of dollars of British shipping supplies.

Capt. Burns built the first steamship in NC in 1818. The name of the steamship was the Prometheus.

Blackbeard’s real name was Edward Teach He got the nickname of Blackbeard because of his thick “black beard.” Blackbeard was a pirate/privateer. He was born in England.

The name of his ship was “Queen Anne’s Revenge.” The ship was used by Blackbeard for less than a year and sunk in 1718 in Beaufort Inlet, NC. The ship was possibly found in 1996 in the waters of Carteret County.

Blackbeard’s treasure is a fantasy—not true!! Old stories: Blackbeard had a tunnel from his house in New Bern to the Tryon Palace where he would send stolen things to Gov. Tryon.
