4.  Why is our school the “Pirates”  Were there “good” pirates?  What does Swansboro have to do with pirates?  Will you be a good pirate this school year?

13.  The first settlement in Swansboro was in 1730 at the White Oak River.  The port at Swansboro became well know with the ship builder, a privateer, Capt. Otway Burns.  He docked his ship, The Snapdragon, at the Swansboro Port and conducted a ship building industry in Swansboro.

14.  Capt. Burns served as a privateer in the War of 1812.  The War of 1812 was fought between the US and Britain. It confirmed American’s independence from England.  He destroyed and captured millions of dollars of British shipping supplies.
