3 3 Village of Paqarimuy “Paqarimuy” means “awakening” in Quechua Adobe bricks prepared in advance for –Five homes –Greenhouse Population had dwindled to 38 people

4 4 Problems in Paqarimuy Short growing season and high altitude limit agriculture Fire destroyed village two years ago Conflict between Paqarimuy and sister village of Taquile Strained relations between villagers and leaders –Some villagers didn’t like new home sites –Some villagers wanted stone rather than adobe homes

5 5 Positives in Paqarimuy Healthy herds of sheep and alpaca Ample pasturelands Fertile soil Cooperation among villagers in –performing chores –rebuilding village Hard working villagers Generally happy Alpaca graze near Paqarimuy in the Andes altiplano
