They were an ancient Indian civilization They lived from 1100 A.D. to the early 1500’s They were called the “Children of the Sun” They believed that Inti was their father.

Who? Their civilization had a well organized army. They had a very clear social structure The Incas also had a good communication system even though….. They did not have a written language

They are from Peru, Chile, Ecuador, and Bolivia. They live on the Andes. They extended from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean. It was the land of the four colors.

The Incas are from South America. The capital was Cuzco which is now Peru. The most sacred city is Machu Picchu. It was located in the high mountains.

The Incas When. Their ancestors lived in Peru as early as 200 B.C The civilization started in Peru It was not until the 9th Inca, Pachacuti, that the Inca state became a true imperial state.

What? There are over 3.5 million Incas then. The buildings on the ground were single storied edifice, built of stone with a thatched grass roof. One of their road ran almost the length of South America coast! Smaller crimes were punished by chopping off of the hands and feet or the gouging of the eyes. They use llamas for traveling and sometimes of foot.

THIER ARE 3.5 MILLION PEOPLE THERE. THEY HAVE INCREDIBLE ROADS. THERE LANGUAGE IS QUECHUA.

WHAT? The Inca were a great people. They believed in many gods, one of them is Inti, the Sun god. They believed he was their father. They were conquered by the Spanish conquistadors.

What? The Inca culture grew out of a long slow development of civilization in the valley of Cusco. Their ruler was the Sapa Inca and his wives the Coyas. The population was from 3.5-7 million people.

What? The Inca recorded information of deaths, births, trade, taxes. They built canals to carry water to dry places They made there clothes from garments of Alpaca. The Incas were excellent farmers, builders, and managers.

What? They believed that gold was sacred. They also believed it was the sweat of the gods. Their religion centered around the sun. They sacrificed (unlike the Aztecs who sacrificed war prisoners) their villagers.

Why ? The Spanish conquistadors were responsible for defeating the two most powerful empires in Latin America. Francisco Pizarro was responsible for capturing and killing the emperor of the Incas. The Incas also died because of the diseases that the Spanish brought with them- like Small Pox.
