Introduction Developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner Traditional IQ tests are too limited Proposed eight broader intelligences Sometimes includes Naturalist Intelligence Schools focus on linguistic and logical mathematical intelligences

Linguistic Intelligence “Word Smart” Ability to learn languages Use language to accomplish goals Use language to express oneself Use language to remember information Often writers, poets, lawyers, and speakers

Logical-Mathematical Intelligence “Number/Reasoning Smart” Analyzes problems logically Easily carries out mathematical operations Associated with scientific and mathematical thinking Often scientists and mathematicians

Musical Intelligence “Music Smart” Skills in performances, composition, and appreciation of music Easy recognition of pitches, tones, and rhythms Often musicians, composers, and dancers

Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence “Body Smart” Potential to use body for self-expression Uses body or parts to solve problems Often mimes, dancers, athletes, and actors

Spatial Intelligence “Picture Smart” Ability to think in pictures Perceives visual world accurately Easily recreates images Often artists, architects, designers, and sculptors

Interpersonal Intelligence “People Smart” Concerned with understanding others Often work effectively with others Easily understand moods, desires, and motivations of others Often political or religious leaders, teachers, sales people, and therapists

Intrapersonal Intelligence “Self Smart” Easily understands oneself Appreciates one’s feelings, fears, and motivations Often novelists and counselors
