Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds September 1, 2006 Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds Christopher Merlan and Curt Newton

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds “OpenCourseWare expresses our belief in the way education can be advanced — by constantly widening access to information and by inspiring others to participate.” — Charles M. Vest, President Emeritus of MIT The Big Idea — Vision 1

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds Video from the Tech Museum Awards 2

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds MIT OpenCourseWare IS NOT: MIT OpenCourseWare IS: › An MIT education › Intended to represent the interactive classroom environment › Degree-granting › A Web-based publication of virtually all MIT course content › Open and available to world › A permanent MIT activity The Big Idea — What is OCW? 3

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds › Syllabus › Lecture notes › Problem sets › Exams › Reading lists › Simulations › Video lectures The Big Idea — 1400 courses 4

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds The Big Idea — Use requirements › Obliges users to meet three use requirements Use must be non-commercial Materials must be attributed to MIT and original author or contributor Publication or distribution of original or derivative materials must be offered freely under identical terms, or “share alike” 5

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds Publication Process During Term: Stellar Created on-the-fly Administered by professor, TA, staff Includes copyrighted materials under “Fair Use” “Snapshot” after term ends Built by OCW staff All materials copyright-cleared OCW services: permissions, images, videos, transcribed notes After Term: OCW +

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds Making a Difference — Access 6 Total Traffic to MIT OCW Content

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds › 66% of visitors hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree › Visitors most frequently interested in courses in electrical engineering, business, physics, and mathematics Making a Difference — Access Educators 17% Self-learners 49% Students 32% 9 Students and TAs seeking supplemental material

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds Making a Difference — Benefits for MIT › Institute-level benefits  Advances MIT’s institutional mission  Enhances MIT’s image around the world  Generates community pride (alumni)  Stimulates collaboration among faculty › Department-level benefits  Showcases individual departments and their curricula  Enhances faculty and student recruitment efforts  Accelerates adoption of the Web 13

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds › More than 263,000 visits from MIT.EDU since 11/1/03 › 35% of Fall 2005 freshmen aware of MIT OCW prior to attending MIT indicate OCW was a significant influence on their choice of school › 71% of all MIT students (undergraduate and graduate) make use of MIT OCW in their research and studies Making a Difference — MIT student use Traffic from MIT.EDU since 9/4/04 14

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds Making a Difference — MIT student use “… OCW was one of the main reasons why I decided to come [to MIT] … I knew the contents of the courses, had a look to the materials, and a good understanding of what I was going to get... that's the reason why I ended [up] here, and not in Stanford or Columbia.” — MIT graduate student “Even before joining MIT last year I started watching and enjoying many of your superb lectures. Needless to say, they were much better and captivating than anything I had attended before on the subject. These lectures have really enhanced my appreciation for physics.” — MIT student in Department of Materials Science and Engineering 15

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds › 77% of MIT’s faculty are now participating in MIT OCW › 60% of MIT faculty are using MIT OCW to revise courses and advise students › 32% of MIT faculty agree that publishing improves their teaching Current Status — MIT faculty use and impact 16

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds › Publication Director  Christopher Merlan › Publication Managers  Alicia Boozer  Daniel Carchidi  Elizabeth DeRienzo  Keith McCluskey  Curt Newton › Intellectual Property Team  Lindsey Weeramuni  Brett Paci 21 How OCW Works with Faculty — OCW Staff › Department Liaisons  Janet Chuang  Frederick Jao  Vincent Koon Kam King  Diandra Lucia  Jocelyn Rodal  Laurel Ruhlen  Aayesha Siddiqui  Yelena Tsitkin

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds How OCW Works with Faculty — Services › Create and capture content  Audit courses and take lecture notes, and transcribe handwritten lecture notes  Take notes to document key discussions / case studies  Photograph, videotape, and/or audiotape course-related events and materials (e.g., labs)  Find public domain images  Provide professional graphic artist services › Organize and reformat content  Structure lecture notes, organize course materials for digital publication, reformat and edit PDFs  Create bibliographies with full citations › Provide advice and expertise  Assist with equation editors, CAD, PowerPoint, Excel, PDFs  Build course sites in Stellar, SloanSpace, Athena, Metamedia  Coordinate with MIT Academic Media Production Services (AMPS) for video and audio production  Train TAs on tools and platforms › Produce archival record of courses and content  Create CD containing source materials and templates  Create.ZIP file of published OCW course content that will be published online and shared with faculty 22

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds “Is My Course Suitable for OCW?” › Too busy  Incremental effort is minimal – typically no more than a few hours. OCW staff handles the rest. › Not stable yet  Start with a baseline version. Many OCW courses are updated every couple of years. › Not enough content because it’s [ a seminar / mostly labs / project intensive / chalk & talk lectures… ]  OCW is flexible in content. We can capture additional material during the term. › Forthcoming texbook  Let’s discuss. OCW version needn’t conflict, as textbook is often a different “derivative work”

Unlocking Knowledge, Empowering Minds Publication Process Initial meeting OCW builds site; IP clearance Review draft site Final edits A little Q&A › Two publication cycles per year: May  November, December  April Live site Instructors, TAs, assistants OCW Staff
