TOB J OURNAL 1 12/18/13 A NIMAL : N EON T REES Is his statement “I want some more” a reflection of purely physical desire? Why is he confused? Provide a specific example of how sexuality seems to be out of control in our culture How has this affected young people’s view of love?

TOB C HAPTER 1 J OURNAL 1 Y OU DO NOT NEED TO WRITE OUT THE QUESTION, HOWEVER YOU SHOULD RESTATE IT Did you ever think about what society would be like without selfishness in relationships? Give a reasonable example of an instance of selfishness in a relationship and a reasonable example of selflessness in a relationship (need to be more than just taking out to dinner/on a date/buying flowers) Created To Love: Chapter 1

“T HROUGH THE FACT THAT THE WORD OF G OD BECAME FLESH, THE BODY ENTERED THEOLOGY THROUGH THE MAIN DOOR. T HE INCARNATION AND REDEMPTION THAT SPRINGS FROM IT BECAME ALSO THE DEFINITIVE SOURCE OF THE SACRAMENTALITY OF M ARRIAGE 1. What does he mean when he says “the body entered theology through the main door”? 2. What does the incarnation tell us/show us about our bodies? 3. What is a sacrament? How does the “sacramentality of marriage” relate to what we’ve discussed so far

TOB J OURNAL 1 12/18/13 R EAD THE BOTTOM OF P.7 THROUGH THE COMPREHENSION AND DISCUSSION QUESTIONS ON P.8. 1. Do you think that many teens look at the broken relationships around them and lose hope for their own futures? 2. Can you name some ways that sexual behavior seems to be out of control in our culture? 3. How has the sexual confusion of our society influenced the view of sex and love by young people? Adults?

TOB C HAPTER 1 N OTES Because of Original Sin, we have: Concupiscence Our tendency to sin affects us all as members of a society that is damaged and hurting from sin In the world- a cycle of our response to sin instead of wanting and desiring to do what is right, we often desire to do the wrong things. Mass Media- desensitized us We have adapted media's understanding of sex Church's view = not in line with it, but... Explains what is in the media in that it agrees with the acknowledgment and recognition of desires expressed Offers answers questions posed by confusing situations and hurt that is also portrayed in media Created To Love: Chapter 1

Lust - disordered desire for an inordinate enjoyment of pleasure Inordinate → Latin = ordinare - to arrange Not enjoyment that is wrong, not pleasure that is wrong, but INORDINATE part that is wrong Seeking own pleasure at expense of GOOD of another Dominates our culture Leads to apathy Apathy leads to lack of motivation to change Result= we settle for less than true, good, and genuinely beautiful relationships World we live in present with Despair (def.) Created To Love: Chapter 1

I S THERE HOPE ? W HERE IS G OD IN ALL OF THIS MESS ? There is hope; God is with us We have to look at the beginning to see how God created sexuality. In this, we aim to discover the PURPOSE of our sexual gifts. See what went wrong, how to live in (and see hope in, not just deal with) where we live today Created To Love: Chapter 1

I N THE BEGINNING... God created man in his image, in the divine image he created them, male and female he created them. Right after image of God, then love, then male and female The qualifier- male and female- is what helps to bring about the vision of who we are- and reveals to us what it means to be in the image and likeness of God. Adam = by himself God gives him desire (not satisfied with loving animals) God meets Adam's need when he awakens to find communion with Eve Peace of the interior gaze – see what hearts' desired right in front of them God's call to love was made visible to them through their bodies. In order for Adam to understand the selfless love that He has for His creation, He gives him woman to love Created To Love: Chapter 1

P ERSONS History of the Church's use of “person” Understood by their relationship with someone/thing else. Man images God not so much in his moment of solitude as he does in his moment of communion" -JP2 I more image God when I am in communion with another, because I am living out my call to love- and God is love Our desires are not just to be tolerated Our desires for communion expressed through our sexuality are beautiful gifts that God gave to us in the beginning We know this because... A and E had a desire for communion and God was pleased- he created that desire "God himself is an eternal exchange of love and he has destined us to share in that exchange"- JP2 Communion that we have on earth is a foreshadowing of the eternal communion that we are to have with God in heaven. Created To Love: Chapter 1

S ACRAMENTALITY OF THE B ODY When we start linking the body to God, then we see that our desires that we were created with must point us in some way to God Sacrament- a visible sign instituted by God to give grace. History of word- sacrament comes from Greek= mysterion (mystery), When translated to Latin it is sacramentum The body, even though it is not one of the seven sacraments, reveals to us something about the mystery of God. "The body in fact, and it alone, is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and divine. It was created to transfer into the visible reality of the world the mystery of God and thus to be a sign of it"- JP2 - the sacramentality of the body. (the body has a special and unique function to help us to see God). Created To Love: Chapter 1

GOALS: C HAPTER 1 Define “theology” and “Theology of the Body” Explain that our bodies are very good, as they were created by God and all that God creates is good. Explain how our culture’s view of sexuality robs humans of dignity Demonstrate that God designed us for communion with himself and with each other Explain how our bodies make visible the invisible mystery of God Identify that the reason for our existence is to be united in an eternal relationship of love with God in heaven

R EVIEW Q UESTIONS What is the meaning of our life? To love and be loved- to find our purpose and be fulfilled through love What is the purpose of the body? To image beauty and the call to love so that we can be brought back into a personal relationship with God, and so that we can see our destiny towards heaven The body has a particular and unique function to help us to understand our purpose and help us to see our destiny towards heaven (that we haven’t fully tasted here on earth). What is Theology of the Body? Writings by John Paul II that explore how the bodies teach us profound truths about the mystery of God. Our bodies are meant to lead us to God, not away from him. It explains that through who we are physically as men and women, we see our purpose and value in life as a person.

TOB C HAPTER 1 J OURNAL 3 Y OU DO NOT NEED TO WRITE OUT THE QUESTION OR THE QUOTE “[Gen2:25] According to this passage, the man and the woman saw themselves as they were, through the mystery of creation. They saw themselves in this way, before knowing that they were naked... They see and knew each other with all the peace of the interior gaze, which creates precisely the fullness of the intimacy of the persons.”- January 2, 1980 JP2 What is the “peace of the interior gaze”? How were they able to experience this? Although our bodies are inherently good, what would the result be if we bared and stared at each other’s naked bodies today? Why is this, really? Created To Love: Chapter 1
