Decolonization of Belgian Congo
Jasmine Harris Jelena Bates Thesis: The Belgian Congo struggled to seek independence before the Cold War due to lack of control, in which nationalist opposed. Throughout their journey, they used violence and military assistance. They were successful in enabling war tactics, which awarded them independence.

Goals Seeked independence from Belgium from 1908
King Leopold II had given up on fighting for independence As Belgium’s rule began to enlarge, so did the population By 1960 more than 80,000 Belgians resided in Congo which were key causes for the Congo Crisis

Methods: “ The Congo Crisis” (1960-1964)
Attacked European officers for independence, which later showed that they couldn’t control their army (beginning of crisis) Congolese Elites formed semi-political organizations, which gradually formed parties

Still needed help in aiding their military
