High School Musical  High School Musical (HSM) began as a television film. Upon its release on January 20, 2006, it became the most successful movie that Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) ever produced  With a plot described by the author and numerous critics as a modern adaptation of Romeo & Juliet Photos © 2008 Walt Disney Pictures. 9 The film starts with the end of the Wildcats' championship basketball game against the West High Knights, where team captain Troy immediately rallies their spirits. With the teams' spirit raised, they win. Photos © 2008 Walt Disney Pictures. Review © David Bruce

Later, at Troy's after-match party at his house, Troy and Gabriella are seen thinking about their future and wishing that their last few months at East High would not end. Photos © 2008 Walt Disney Pictures. Review © David Bruce

Drama teacher Ms. Darbus notices that since there were so few sign-ups for the spring musical, Sharpay decides to do a one-woman show. This alarms Kelsi, who is writing the show, so she signs up almost everyone in the class for it instead. The musical comes about. Photos © 2008 Walt Disney Pictures. Review © David Bruce

The Julliard representatives are there, and watch as the show seems to go well. Jimmie performs with Sharpay, receiving his own standing ovation. Troy and Gabriella appear during the second half of the show and sing their duet together ("Just Wanna Be with You"). Photos © 2008 Walt Disney Pictures. Review © David Bruce

The musical's finale segues to the graduation ceremony where Troy is giving the class speech. Throwing their caps in the air, the graduates form a giant wildcat before breaking out into song and dance. Photos © 2008 Walt Disney Pictures. Review © David Bruce

Consensus voice: "[An] infectiously upbeat bigscreen extension of Disney Channel's runaway TV movie sensation. “ --Peter Debruge, Variety Photos © 2008 Walt Disney Pictures. Review © David Bruce

“They’re high school seniors, so let’s give them the pressures that high school seniors have about prom, finals, graduation and going away. There’s a balance—we’re making musical comedy but we want to try and base it in some emotional reality.” --Peter Barsocchini, screenwriter Photos © 2008 Walt Disney Pictures. Review © David Bruce

This latest sequel follows high school seniors Troy and Gabriella, who are faced with the ultimate prospect of being separated from one another as they go off in different directions after graduating from East High. Joined by the rest of their Wildcat friends, they stage an elaborate spring musical reflecting their experiences, hopes and fears about the future. Wow! Separation, mixed with hopes and fears about the future. Critics may dismiss the HSM 1-2-3, but they cannot dismiss the very real concerns that this series addresses! And because it connects so well with these HS realities, it has become the phenomena it is. HSM3 is truth within a musical fantasy. Review © David Bruce

--William Arthur Ward, inspirational writer.
HOW TO BE A GOOD FRIEND (especially when your friends are going through life changing moments –like graduation) “A true friend knows your weaknesses but shows you your strengths; feels your fears but fortifies your faith; sees your anxieties but frees your spirit; recognizes your disabilities but emphasizes your possibilities.” --William Arthur Ward, inspirational writer. 18 “There’s something about teenage life that is the same all around the world” --Bill Borden, producer
