Pine Road Postal System Anticipated Opening: January 2012
12
Project Overview: A school-wide postal system called “Pine Road Post Office” will be established at Pine Road Elementary in the Lower Moreland Township School District. This program will focus on providing vocational skills to life skills students, as well as promoting writing and social skills among all the students at Pine Road. It is expected that by providing the vocational skills to the life skills students, they will able to use the skills learned to be active working members of the Huntingdon Valley Community. The Pine Road Post Office will utilize the life skills students as postal workers. Each student will be expected to successfully participate in the year-long program. They are expected to contribute 3-4 hours each week. The students will use a map of the school to locate classrooms on their route. Once a week they will pick up the mail from each classroom, sort the mail and deliver the mail to the correct classrooms. They will clock in and out of each shift, teaching the students about time. They will also receive a weekly paycheck that they can cash and use at the classroom school store, aiding in teaching the students money skills. All students in the school will be expected to write post cards to their pen pals in various grade levels. The teachers will teach the students conventions of writing as well as how to write post cards, letters and fill out envelopes. At the end of the year, the students will get together with their pen pals for a meet-and-greet picnic.

Goal #4– The students will be able to pick up, sort and drop off mail to the various classrooms. Goal #5- The students will be able to use conventions of writing to write letters, post cards and fill out envelopes.
