2 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 2 The presentation has been designed so that it can be used independently of GMTU Report 998 for those who want an overview of the traffic movements around Rochdale but do not wish to see the detailed tabulations GMTU Reports 998 & 998P are part of a series of reports presenting the data from the 2002 GMATS surveys GMATS Surveys 2002 Report 998P – Rochdale Key Centre

3 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 3 Travellers leaving Rochdale Key Centre by car & bus were asked about their journeys as they crossed a cordon around the centre Rail passengers boarding at Rochdale station were also interviewed This presentation gives an overview of the findings from those surveys It considers first people who had visited the Centre, then those travelling through GMATS Surveys 2002 Rochdale Key Centre

18 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 18 The average distance for all goods vehicles was 10 km HGVs travelled 38 km on average compared to 6 km for LGVs and 21 km for MGVs Commercial Vehicles How far did they travel?

19 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 19 70% of all trips leaving the Key Centre were going home The next main activities were business visits 7% and going to work 6% Visitors to the Key Centre What did they do at their destination?

20 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 20 75% of trips finished in Rochdale. This did not vary much for different destination activities 15% of people going home lived in the rest of Greater Manchester and 10% outside Visitors to the Key Centre Where did they go/for what purpose?

21 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 21 All trips passing through the survey cordon All the previous slides have referred to trips starting in the Key centre. These next slides look at all trips crossing the survey cordon In the case of bus trips, all trips crossing the survey cordon are included In the case of rail, only those trips which either start at Rochdale Station or require an interchange at Rochdale Station are included i.e. passengers on trains such as the Littleborough to Manchester service were not surveyed unless they changed trains or started at Rochdale

22 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 22 89% of all trips crossing the cordon were made by car, 10% by bus and 1% by rail 74% of car trips and 75% bus trips finished within Rochdale 53% of rail trips finished at Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon How and where were they travelling?

23 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 23 29% of all trips were either ‘Home to Work’ or ‘Work to Home’ trips ‘Home to Shopping’ and ‘Shopping to Home’ accounted for another 17% of trips 21% ‘Home to Employers Business’ ended outside Greater Manchester All trips passing through the survey cordon What was their purpose?

24 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 24 The average distance travelled for cars was 9 Km, for buses 6 Km and for Rail 22 Km The longest distances for all modes were ‘Home to employers business’ (18 Km) and ‘Employers business to home’ (18 Km) ‘Home to work’ trips were 11 Km by car, 7 Km by bus and 17 Km by rail. The return directions were slightly shorter All trips passing through the survey cordon How far were they travelling?

25 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 25 96% of people walked from the alighting bus stop 4% caught another bus This is similar for all journey purposes Bus trips passing through the survey cordon How did people get to their destination from the bus?

26 Rochdale Key Centre Analysis 26 On average there were 11 people per bus crossing the cordon between 07:00 and 19:00 This varied from an average occupancy of 8 during the morning peak (07:00 to 09:30) and 10 during the inter-peak (09:30 to 15:30) to 15 in the evening peak (15:30 to 18:30) Bus trips passing through the survey cordon What was their average occupancy?
