4 Northern-a big, complex railway… 2,500 services per day, more than any other TOC – 13% of national PPM 89.6m passenger journeys –5 th biggest TOC and more than West Coast, East Coast, TPE and XC combined 280 signal boxes (34% of the national total) 2300 Drivers & Conductors (based at 20 train crew depots) We run more trains by 06:45 than East Coast do all day Our services call at 20% of UK stations

5 … with an old, diverse fleet 14 types of train –different sizes (1,2,3 & 4 carriage sets) –4 x electric types (41 x trains) –10 x diesel types (272 x trains) Age of fleet between 10 – 26 years old Average age of diesel fleet 24 years old 5 x depots & 7 servicing locations 29 x overnight stabling locations 75% improvement in fleet reliability Over two thirds of the fleet refurbished Expansion of fleet from 271 to 313 trains 60 carriages implemented December 2011

19 Introduction to TfGM Owns and manages bus stations, interchanges and Travelshops, and provides GM’s public transport information services Owns the Metrolink network, which is operated by a franchisee Provides concessionary fare schemes and supported bus services Develops and delivers major schemes, e.g. Metrolink, expansion Co-ordinates delivery by operators of public transport services Co-ordinates strategic highway management functions, including management of traffic signals provision, road safety and active travel (cycling and walking) Develops and co-ordinates forward transport strategy and investment priorities for Greater Manchester

20 Transport in Greater Manchester today Well over 1 million peak-time daily commuters to support Non-car travel growth in past decade, particularly for travel to Regional Centre High demand at peak times on key sections of highway and public transport networks Largest investment programme outside London underway and work continues to secure further investment through central government, third parties and Greater Manchester City Deal Technology and smarter choices initiatives underway to better promote all travel options

21 Key Initiatives and Programmes (1) Metrolink Expansion & GMTF Capital Investment Programme Multi-modal investment programme - largest outside London – underway, including Ashton Northern Bypass and Ashton Metrolink line LSTF Investment Programme £50 million programme of smarter choices, active travel and smart technology projects to support GMTF investment and current network Includes Ashton Cycle Hub; local cycle access improvements; business travel planning services and job-seeker support programme Smart-Ticketing Multi-modal roll-out starting with Metrolink in late 2013 Review of ticketing and fares arrangements
