Welcome! Karibu! Bienvenue! Laipni lūdzam! Добро пожаловать! خوش آمدید!

Homework What is meant by ‘homework’? ‘Homework’ refers to work given to students by their teachers to be completed outside of class. It is an extension of work done in the class. ‘Homework’ gets its name from the fact that most students do the majority of such work at home.

Homework Why is Homework important? Homework is a very important part of your child’s learning. Research shows that students who do more homework get better examination results. It helps your child to extend and reinforce your child’s school work. Offers schools an opportunity to let parents know what their children are learning.

Homework Prepares your child for future learning. Encourages your child to become independent learners; Develops self discipline; Encourages good study habits; Gives a sense of responsibility; Develops good time management skills.

Homework Reinforcement of class work; Research topics or investigations; Preparation for class work; Coursework; Reviewing, redrafting or summarising a piece of work done in class; Preparation for a presentation; Practice examination questions; Review or revise previous learning/work.

Homework How can YOU support your child with their homework? You can support your child by: Setting aside regular time for your child to do the homework each day.

Homework Do expect that your child should get homework on a regular basis and make sure your child knows this. Do the homework at a suitable time; not just before bedtime when your child is feeling tired and unlikely to concentrate. Spend no more than 20 minutes at a time with breaks in between. Stick to these times.

Homework Make sure that your child has any equipment to do the homework. Your child is likely to need a pen, pencil, rubber, ruler and different coloured highlighters. Colouring pencils may be needed. For maths may need: calculator, protractor and compass. For English may need: [bilingual] dictionary

Homework Check whether your child will need any resources like a book or internet access for research. If possible make sure that your child uses a desk or other worktable to complete the homework.

Homework Have an interest in your child’s homework. Ask your child whether they have got any set homework or whether they can review or revise previous work; there is ALWAYS previous work that can be reviewed or revised. Ask questions about the homework set, or if none is set, what other work your child could review or revise.

Homework Discuss the homework with your child. Does your child know what to do and how to do it? Use a quiet and comfortable area that is well lit; don’t do homework in front of the television with your child’s favourite programme on! Support your child with their homework; DO NOT DO IT FOR THEM!

Homework Make sure there are no distractions. Make sure your child is not distracted by the television, video games, brothers/sisters, family members or friends. Do not use the vacuum cleaner at this time! Try not to use the telephone at this time.

Homework When your child tells you that they have completed their homework, ask to be shown it to see how well it has been done and check that it is complete. Talk about the homework that your child has done and ask them what they did and why they did it. When your child has done their homework, praise them for their efforts and perhaps give them a treat, for example, a favourite meal.

Homework Remember … Your interest and encouragement in your child’s education will provide an added incentive to do their homework, learn, and excel – not only in education, but in other aspects of their life as well.

Homework Remember … Encourage your child to complete the homework on the day it is set. This is because if there are any issues like your child cannot do the homework set or does not have the required resources, your child then still has time to speak to someone and get some support or obtain the resources needed before the deadline set for handing in the homework.

Homework Remember … Parents play a large part in how children think about school and homework. Your child needs to see that you support the need to complete homework in a positive, directed, manner and that it be neat, complete, and on time. Act excited and pleased about their completion of the work; reward them with praise and family time!

Homework Remember … Praise your child for work done well and neatly and for positive study habits. It is this involvement with your child’s homework that will help your child attain the maximum educational success in school and beyond.

Homework Refreshments! Кофе! Rafraîchissements! Vinywaji! تنقلات! Atspirdzinājumi!

Homework What does it mean and what happens if your child does not complete the homework set? By not doing the homework set, it shows that your child has not understood what was taught. Show that there are other issues. Your child does not have organisational or time management skills.

Homework Most likely that your child be given a consequence. This may be a detention or loss of points. You child may still be required to complete the homework.
