4 4 Panopticon   What is it?   How does it relate to The Giver?

5 5 Panopticon   Whether it is true or not, a member of a group believes that he/she is constantly under surveillance and behaves accordingly.

6 6 Panopticon   In The Giver, the society had cameras all over.   They were not constantly monitored, however, the members were being video-taped.   If something went wrong, the government could always go back and look at the tapes.

7 7 Omniscient  In writing, called “third-person” view.  What is a Omniscient God?  Omniscient means “all knowing-all seeing.”

8 8 Omniscient God  In the past, society was ruled by fear of God.  Have we replaced an “Omniscient God” with an “Omniscient Government?  The fear of being punished by the government replaces our desire to “do the right thing” because the government will take care of it.

9 9 Privacy Rights   Constitutionally all citizens are protected.   “A man’s home is his castle.”   Patents, Copyrights, Private Property   Is it worth the loss of some privacy if it improves the safety of all members of society?

10 10 Privacy Rights  Problem: Where do you limit the intrusion of the government into personal lives.

11 11 Privacy Rights   Who had real privacy in The Giver?   Why do you believe this?
