3 Identifying Health Risks
Risk Behaviors: Actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others The CDC has identified 6 behaviors that account for most of the deaths & disabilities among young people: Tobacco use Unhealthy dietary behaviors Inadequate physical activity Alcohol and other drug use Sexual behaviors (can result in what??) Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence Step one: Understand the role of individual responsibility regarding risky behavior Sep two: Examine your current behavior and make necessary behavior changes

4 Risks & Consequences Cumulative Risks: Are related risks that increase in effect with each added risk, or combinations of risky behaviors. These may be repeated behaviors or combinations of poor choices. Examples: Smoking, eating a fast food meal, texting while driving………can you name any more??? *Repeated behaviors over time (smoking, eating fatty foods) Combinations (driving over the speed limit, & not wearing a seat belt) -Other examples?

5 Partner Activity Rate the following risky behaviors being low & 10 being high. A. Bungee Jumping B. Sky diving C. Eating fast food 3 days a week D. Asking someone out on a date that you don’t know very well E. Not wearing a seatbelt F. Sharing a water bottle G. Riding home with someone who’s been drinking

6 How to Avoid or Reduce Risks
Prevention: Taking steps to keep something from happening or getting worse. What are some things we do (or have already done) to prevent health problems? Abstinence: A deliberate decision to avoid high risk behaviors. What are some things we should abstain from? -Even those who have been sexually active in the past or have used drugs still have the opportunity to chose abstinence. -Just because you have may have made a poor choice in the past des not mean you are doomed to make poor choices forever. As discussed, the reason why attitude and behavior are considered to be the most easily controlled, is that YOU have the power to change them.
