MEDICONTUR – Natural Yellow Filter When a technology follows the nature..

„The addition of a covalently bound yellow dye results in a IOL UV/visible light transmittance curve that mimics the protection provided by the natural, precataractous adult human crystalline lens. There is an indirect evidence showing that this addition may result in a reduction Of the risk for macular degeneration and progression..“ Werner, Biocompatibility of intraocular lens materials; 2008 Wolters Kluwer Health „Some manufactures adopted to an approach of a violet light-filtering chromophore based o studies that UV radiation and violet radiation 400-440nm have substantial potential acute UV/blue phototoxicity while Blue light (440-500nm) has significant potential acute UV/blue phototoxicity, but it is vital for scotopic vision“ Werner, Biocompatibility of intraocular lens materials; 2008 Wolters Kluwer Health

Blue light is more important for scotopic (night time) than photopic (day time) vision. Scotopic sensitivity declines twice as fast with aging as does photopic sensitivity; therefore night vision is a major problem for older adults. Clear IOLs – only UV blockers – have potential to improve a night vision Scotopic and photopic luminous efficiencies peak at 507 nm (bl-green) and 555 (gr-yellow) Alcon yellow – blocks 50% at 450nm and 25% at 480nm Blue light – potential to have retinal phototoxicity; there is not definitive conclusion about the relationship between visible light and AMD… L Werner at al.: New photochromic foldable IOLs: Preliminary study of feasibility and biocompatibility; J Cataract Surg 2006;32:1214-1221

Blue light is not associated with AMD: 9 of 11 major epidemiological studies show no correlation between AMD and lifelong light exposure1 Factors that have been correlated with AMD are: 1) Age 2) Genetics 3) Smoking 4) Nutrition Blue light has been proven to be essential for: Optimal scotopic vision1 Healthy circadian rhythms2-4 Mainster. Blue light provides 35% of scotopic sensitivity Melatonin suppression is controlled by blue light sensitive retinal ganglion cells Blue light provides 55% of melatonin suppression* Mainster. BJO. 2006. 2. Werner. BJO. 2005. 3. Schwiegerling J. JCRS. 2006.

To Block or Not to Block Blue Light?

MEDICONTUR „natural yellow filter approach“

"Natural" yellow filter Filtering as much as necessary – preserving as much as possible. For a balanced protection of the macula against UV-A and blue light by an absorption curve close to that of the human crystalline lens, preserving the natural colour perception and contrast sensitivity.
