2 Agenda Introduction What is the OS ? What is Linux OS ? Discussion Who Supports the Linux OS ? Linux Distributions. What are the Linux advantages ? Conclusion & Recommendations

3 Introduction What is the OS ? What is Linux OS ?

4 What is the Operating System? 1/3 An operating system is an important part of almost every computer system. Computer System Component: 1. Hardware – provides basic computing resources (CPU, memory, I/O devices). 2. Operating system – controls and coordinates the use of the hardware among the various application programs for the various users. 3. Applications programs – define the ways in which the system resources are used to solve the computing problems of the users (compilers, database systems, video games, business programs). 4. Users (people, machines, other computers).

6 What is (OS) ?3/3 An operating system (OS) is a program that allows you to interact with the computer -- all of the software and hardware on your computer. How? Basically, there are two ways. With a command-line operating system (e.g., DOS), you type a text command and the computer responds according to that command. With a graphical user interface (GUI) operating system (e.g., Windows), you interact with the computer through a graphical interface with pictures and buttons by using the mouse and keyboard.

7 What is Linux ? 1/3 1 st version of Linux was released in 1991. Linux was developed by a young student, Linus Torvalds, at the University of Helsinki in Finland. Linux was interested in Minix, which is a clone version of UNIX developed for educational purposes. Linux wanted to develop a Unix OS for his PC that overcame the limitations of Minix.

8 What is Linux ? 2/3 Linux is open source free version of UNIX operating system. Linux work on 386, 486, 586, Pentium, and I64 processors from Intel. Also SPARC processors from Sun. Also MIPS, RISC, PowerPC, SGI, Motorola, and other processors. Linux provide all other operating systems properties like: Multitask Multi-users TCP/IP protocol

9 What is Linux ? 3/3 Linux can work with other operating systems (in PC or Network). Linux provide access to files in other operating systems like: Windows, Solaris, Mac, OS/2, and HP-Unix. Also there is WINE program enable Linux to run Windows programs.

10 Discussion Who Supports the Linux OS ? Linux Distributions. What are the Linux advantages ?

11 Who Supports Linux? 1/6 Linux has found a large following, from abroad spectrum of organizations. While increasing the users of Linux in the word, many of software companies concern the Linux.

12 Who Supports Linux? 2/6 IBM company provide all programs to work on Linux like Via Voice program. Corel company provide Corel Draw 8 and Word Perfect programs to work in Linux.

13 Who Supports Linux? 3/6 Also Sun company provide the development tools of Java language such as: J2SE, J2EE, and J2ME Sun One Studio Apache Tomcat Netbeans (co-operated with www.netbeans.org)www.netbeans.org

14 Who Supports Linux? 4/6 Also Real Networks company provide the Real Player 10 to work in Linux Environment:

15 Who Supports Linux? 5/6 Also there is a package in Linux to run all office files such as Word, Excel, Power Point, and others :

17 Who Supports Linux? 6/6 All programs and applications can you find in the following site: www.tucows.com All packages (rpm) you need will find it in: http://rpmseek.com/rpm/ http://rpmseek.com/rpm/

18 Linux Distributions 1/6 Linux distribution is a package containing kernel, GNU utilities, and applications, and often an installer. Most distributions are available in more than one form. Some vendors separate distributions, with one targeted for desktop, and another for server.

19 Linux Distributions 2/6 Red Hat Linux Red Hat is one of the most popular distributions, especially in server market. It has been around for a while and has acquired a reputation for consistency and reliability. It provides the type of high- quality support that is valued by companies. More information is available at: www.redhat.com

20 Linux Distributions 3/6 Mandrake Linux Originally Mandrake was Red Hat with some additions, but now is totally different distribution. Mandrake is currently the most popular home distribution in U.S. Installation is very easy, and it runs by the KDE GUI More information is available at: www.linux-mandrake.com

21 Linux Distributions 4/6 SuSE Linux The most popular distribution in Europe. SuSE offers an easy to use installation system, as well as good tool to maintain the system after installation. SuSE also made some excellent partnership in the server world, and is a good choice for large enterprise enviroment. More information is available at: www.suse.com

22 Linux Distributions 5/6 Lindows Lindows based software installation is quick and easy. Lycoris Is designed to be a user-friendly Linux distribution with particular emphasis on transitioning from Windows operating systems. Good choice for beginners.

23 Linux Distributions 6/6 Notes: If you still don’t know which distribution you want to start with, pick a middle-of-the road distribution such as Red Hat or Mandrake. SuSE appears to be somewhat more popular in Europe. Try one and have fun with it. If you don’t like your first pick, try another one. You can easily add any software packages not included in your original installation.

24 What is Linux Advantages ? 1/5 Low Cost: You don’t need to spend time and money to obtain licenses since Linux and much of it’s software come with the GNU General Public License. You can start to work immediately without worrying that your software may stop working anytime because the free trial version expires. Stability: Linux doesn’t need to be rebooted periodically to maintain performance levels. It doesn’t freeze up or slow down over time due to memory leaks and such. Continuous up-times of hundreds of days (up to a year or more) are not uncommon.

25 What is Linux Advantages ? 2/5 Performance: Linux provides persistent high performance on workstations and on networks. It can handle unusually large numbers of users simultaneously. Network Friendliness: Linux was developed by a group of programmers over the Internet and has therefore strong support for network functionality; client and server systems can be easily set up on any computer running Linux. It can perform tasks such as network backups faster and more reliably than alternative systems.

26 What is Linux Advantages ? 3/5 Flexibility: Linux can be used for high performance server applications, desktop applications, and embedded systems. You can save disk space by only installing the components needed for a particular use. You can restrict the use of specific components by installing for example only selected office applications instead of the whole suite. Compatibility: It runs all common Unix software packages and can process all common file formats.

27 What is Linux Advantages ? 4/5 Choice: The large number of Linux distributions gives you a choice. Each distribution is developed and supported by a different organization. You can pick the one you like best; the core functionalities are the same; most software runs on most distributions. Fast and Easy Installation: Most Linux distributions come with user-friendly installation and setup programs.

28 What is Linux Advantages ? 5/5 Multitasking: Linux is designed to do many things at the same time; e.g., a large printing job in the background won’t slow down your other work. Security: Linux is one of the most secure operating systems. “Walls” and flexible file access permission systems prevent access by unwanted visitors or viruses. Open Source: If you develop software that requires knowledge or modification of the operating system code, Linux’s source code is at your fingertips,

29 Conclusion & Recommendations Before solving problems: You should include as much relevant information about your system and your problem as possible. The Internet is an excellent way to get help with your Linux problems.

30 Thank You
