What is a Sacrament? Original definition: A sacrament is an outward sign, instituted by Christ, to give grace. Expanded definition: A sacrament is an efficacious outward sign, instituted by Christ and administered by the Church, to give grace (and to increase divine life within us).

Outward Sign—anointing with chrism, laying on of hands, “Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit” Instituted by Christ—Acts 1:8; Acts Chapter 2; Acts 8:14-16 …and administered by the Church—ordinary minister is the Bishop, but can be delegated under special circumstances to a priest To give grace—perfects grace of Baptism, strengthens us to faithfully fulfill our vocation in the Church and witness to Christ, seals us indelibly with the Holy Spirit and imparts His gifts
