1 Introduction to the Reformation
What is the difference between Protestant and Catholic???

2 What was the feudal system?
The feudal system was a system in the Middle Ages that controlled all aspects of life (political, military, and social) The feudal system was based on who owned land, and the relationship between lord and vassal

3 Catholic Church and the people…
The Church was VERY important to the everyday life of people in the Middle Ages There was only ONE type of Church in the Middle Ages, and that was the CATHOLIC Church

4 Just like with the feudal system….
There was a hierarchy to the Catholic Church

5 The most powerful people during the Middle Ages were the Clergy
Clergy: people who are ordained in the church (i.e. priests, ministers, archbishops, etc.) Vocabulary

6 Pope Cardinal Archbishop Bishop Priest Laypeople
Greatest authority of all in the Catholic Church Pope Cardinal Archbishop Authority over priests and Laypeople Bishop Priest Ordinary church members, also known as Laypeople

7 The Bible _The Pope__ decided how to interpret the __the Bible__ and God’s will. The people of the church were told to __listen _ to church officials. In fact, the Bible was only written in _Latin___ so “normal” every day people couldn’t even read it!

8 Priests Catholics believed that _Priests__ were the link between __heaven and Earth___.

9 Sins Catholics believed that Priests and the Pope were able to _forgive sins____ -- at a price. Gifts, or __tithes__ were given to the church.

payment of money or gifts to the Catholic Church, which in exchange, the sinner is forgiven their sins Another word for indulgences is pardons Vocabulary
