Problem question: How do people celebrate Christmas in Great Britain and Russia?

Aim: to learn peculiarities of Christmas celebration in Great Britain and Russia Tasks: 1.To learn how people in Russia and Great Britain prepare to celebrate Christmas. 2.To find out the main Christmas symbols and tell what they mean. 3.To find information about folk rites in Christmas and Holy days in Russia and Great Britain. 4.To find examples of folklore and make a theatrical performance. 5.To learn about charitable actions of the Trios church in Aramil and find the names of sponsors. 6. Before Christmas in Great Britain Christmas is one of the brightest Christian holidays in the year. From the end of November people arrange Christmas Sales, buy presents. People decorate houses, offices, streets, make competitions.

All the family gathers together pupils and students have holidays, adult people have day offs. Children wait for Santa-Claus, write letters to him, put stockings for presents on their beds or above the fire-place. Religious people go to Christmas service. It starts in the midnight. The other people gather at Christmas table.

Orthodox Christmas Calm quiet holiday People celebrate it in families Churches organize services, make Christmas misteries. People go round carol singing, sing hymns to Christ and wish welfare and health to hosts of the house. On Christmas Eve and Holy days people tell fortunes.

Symbols of Christmas Night of candles. Candle is the light of Jesus Christ. There is a tradition to decorate houses with candles, lanterns, garlands. Christmas tree The tradition to decorate a Christmas tree comes from German people. It was a tradition to decorate it with fruit, sweets, and hand-made toys. Now we decorate it with special glass toys and light garlands

Bells Ringing the bells comes from pagan times. People need to make noise and to kick bad spirits. Now bells ring in all churches after services. In such a way people greet the born of Jesus Christ.

Christmas Symbols: Christmas Log The tradition to burn Christmas log comes from the Vikings. They make a cross on it, put grains with honey on it and the log burns for a long time. If it does not burn long it is a bad thing for the hosts. Now people in Great Britain also have such a tradition. They do not go to sleep and see how it is burning. They eat, drink tea, talk and watch it.

Our conclusions Traditions of celebration Christmas in Great Britain and Russia are very various. There are both church and folk traditions. The main traditions of Christmas celebration in Great Britain are similar with Russian but there are a few different. Christmas symbols are the same for the whole Christian world. Interview of pupils shows that many of them do not know well symbols and traditions of Christmas celebration and it underlines the importance of our topic!
