2 What is Population Distribution? Population Distribution: The pattern of population in a country, continent or the world. o Only 30% of Earth is made up of land o Much of that land is inhospitable; mountain peaks, deserts, frozen tundra o Europe and Asia most densely populated

3 What factors determine Population Distribution?  Availability of natural resources: oil, farmable land, and water

6 What factors determine Population Distribution?  Government policies: freedom and stability (Most people like living in areas with freedom and safety)

8 What factors determine Population Distribution?  Rural and urban settlement patterns (Many people move to urban cities for better job opportunities) Urban: An area with a lot of industry; cities. Rural: An area without a lot of industry; countryside. Industrialization: The process of becoming a country with more industry.

9 What factors determine Population Distribution?  Capital resources: (transportation -roads, airports, trains and technology) Capital Resource: Tools, machines, and factories used to produce goods.

10 What factors determine Population Distribution?  Conflicts: many refugees relocate looking for stability and escape from persecution. Refugee: a person who flees to another country to escape persecution or disaster.

11 What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Birth and death rates (factoring in war, disease, and migration). Birth rate: the number of births per year for every 1,000 people. Death rate: the number of deaths per year for every 1,000 people.

12 What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Male/female distribution: number of a specific sex in a population.

13 What are characteristics of Human Populations?  Life expectancy: the average number of years a person can expect to live based on standards of living.
