What are your long-term health goals? How does your environment affect your health? How do cultural differences create health challenges? How does heredity affect health risks? How can you change your behavior to improve your health? Why are diet and exercise important to your health? How can you learn more about improving your health? Explain questions as needed. Lesson 1 The Three Parts of Good Health

Health Is a state of being well that has three parts.
These three parts are physical, social, and emotional health. A person must experience all three types of health.

Three types of Health Physical Health: the body’s ability to meet the demands of daily living Allows a person to complete tasks without getting tired Social Health: the ability to get along with other Comes from behaviors that show trust, honesty, respect, responsibility, fairness and good citizenship Emotional Health: the ability to handle the problems and pressures of daily life Comes from feeling good about yourself All three parts work together. When one type suffers the others do too.

Good social, emotional and physical health can help prevent disease. To achieve physical health… Apply good judgment and self-control in diet and exercise To achieve social health… Practice making and keeping good friends To achieve emotional health… Practice handling your feelings in acceptable ways Disease is a condition that harms or stops the normal working of the body.

What is a health risk? A health risk is an action or condition that may contrubute to injury or disease. Some causes of risks are: Heredity Environment, both physical and social Culture Behavior

Heredity and Risk What is heredity? Does heredity cause risk?
Heredity is the passage of physical characteristics from parents to children. Heredity can be a cause of health risks. People cannot change their heredity They CAN change their lifestyle to become less likely to get sick.

Environment and Risk What is environment? Does environment cause risk?
Physical environment is the area around a person. Social environment is community resources such as access to doctors, hospitals, family counseling, and afterschool programs. Physical environment includes the air, water, land, plants, animals, and buildings. Poor social environment can cause health risks.

How Does Culture Cause Risk?
A culture is made up of the beliefs, way of living, and language of a group of people. Affects how people receive, understand, and use health information. More problems may come from people not knowing where to get health care.

Behavioral Risks You cannot change your heredity, but you can change the risks in your environment.

Behavioral Risks Alcohol Tobacco
Alcohol is a drug which affects every major system in the body. May cause: dizziness, poor driving ability, problems with senses and memory. Long-term dangers: disease and damage to body parts such as heart, liver, stomach, colon, and mouth. Tobacco use also has harmful effects: increase heart rate and blood pressure to very dangerous levels. Causes buildup of material in blood vessels or lungs- may result in life-threatening diseases Smokers cause damage to others.

Behavioral Risks Other Drugs Failure to Abstain
Taking drugs that have not been advised by your health care professional can cause many serious health problems. Using the wrong drugs can even lead to death. They can cause organs to deteriorate, or eat away a little at a time. Drugs can cause people to feel confusion and panic; which can lead to unhealthy decisions. Abstain means to choose not to have. Failure to abstain from a sexual relationship can result in unexpected pregnancy and diseases. Using alcohol or other drugs can impair, or have a negative effect on, a person’s judgment. Alcohol or other drugs might cause a person to do something dangerous.

Behavioral Risks Failure to observe safety rules in the home…
Specific actions you take or do not take in the home also can cause health risks. Keep your home in good repair. Make sure appliances are correctly wired and electrical outlets are not overloaded. Keep fire extinguishers handy and install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. These are just a few ways to be safer at home.

How do you set goals? Short-term goal: one you can accomplish quickly (example- you can eat healthy foods and workout this week) Long-term goal: one you can accomplish over a long period of time (example- you can get to the weight you want within this upcoming year) When you set goals you figure out what you want to accomplish. Work actively toward healthy literacy- gathering understanding and using information to improve health results.

How do you change behaviors?
Gaining Awareness Gaining knowledge Being aware means paying attention to the signals your mind and body send you. Be aware of how you feel. You can work toward solving problems when you are aware. You have the power to make decisions that will help you feel healthier. You can use your power to learn more about health. Health literacy will guide you in that direction. You can read information in books, magazines, and online. You can also ask teachers, family members, and health care professionals for information.

Applying Skills 1. Define the problem. 2. Come up with possible solutions. 3. Consider the consequences of each solution. 4. Put your plan into action. 5. Evaluate the outcome. Lesson 4 Review What are the five steps for solving a problem and making a decision? What is health literacy? What are three tools for changing behaviors? Critical thinking: Name one of your short-term goals and one of your long-term goals. Critical thinking: Why is it important to evaluate the outcome of a decision?
