3. NewMexico of physicalfeatures The Basin and Range region occupies the southwest and a corridor northeastward to Santa Fe. It consists of alternating dry basins and barren mountain ranges. Some of the ranges are rugged, but most are rounded and of relatively low relief. Among the chief ranges, those with elevations above 8,000 feet (2,400 m) are the Sacramento, Guadalupe, San Andres, Manzano, Black, Mogollon, San Mateo, and Gallo mountains

4. New Mexico Climate Average annual precipitation (1971–2000) was 9.5 in (24 cm) in Albuquerque in the desert; at high elevations, annual precipitation averaged over 20 in (50 cm). Nearly one-half the annual rainfall comes during July and August, and thunderstorms are common in the summer. Snow is much more frequent in the north than in the south; Albuquerque gets about 10 in (25 cm) of snow per year, and the northern mountains receive up to 100 in (254 cm).

The Mexican eagle grasping a snake in its beak and cactus in its talons portrays an ancient Aztec myth and symbolizes that New Mexico treasures its Spanish, Mexican and Native American traditions (New Mexico was settled by Spanish colonists and was later part of Mexico).
