Class Activity Divide into groups of 5. Assign one member of the group as the materials manager (responsible for getting markers and chart paper) and one member of the group as the recorder. Discuss and record on your chart paper answers to the questions that are posted on the next slide. Make sure to include ALL members of the group in the discussions.

Questions Come up with a definition of screen time. List some negative impacts associated with too much screen time (there’s lots!). HINT: Consider how screen time can impact a person’s health, relationships and education. List some ways to reduce screen time.

Definition of Screen Time The amount of time spent in front of media devices while being sedentary.

Some ways to reduce screen time Set screen time limits (ie: max 2hrs/day) Log screen time vs active time* Make screen time active (ie: stretch, do yoga or lift weights while in front of the tv) Complete homework screen- free Create screen-free bedrooms

Screen Time Stats Children ages 8-18 spend the following amount of time in front of a screen daily: Approximately 7.5 hours using entertainment media. Approximately 4.5 hours watching TV. Approximately 1.5 hours on the computer. Over an hour playing videogames. VERSUS 25 minutes per day that children spend reading books. From the Canadian Health Measures Survey, only 9% of boys and 4% of girls meet the new Canadian Physical activity guidelines (60 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity daily)

For Homework Complete the screen time versus physical activity chart to compare how much time you are spending in front of a screen with how much time you are being physically active. Do this for five consecutive days! Write a brief reflection about your total BE HONEST! Due next health class.

Extra Credit Complete the screen time versus physical activity chart for ten consecutive days. Find a website with information aimed at reducing screen time. In a word document or on a sheet of paper, provide the URL and write a brief paragraph summarizing what you found. This can include what you think strengths and weaknesses of the website were, any statistics you found, information about an organization etc... Due next health class

Take Away Points Screen time can provide learning opportunities but you have to to be careful: too much of it can affect your health! Take steps to manage your screen time and make sure you’re getting appropriate amounts of physical activity! To be successful in anything in life, you have to be balanced!
