What is MassMotion? MassMotion is the world’s most advanced pedestrian simulation and crowd analysis software. It was developed by Arup to address deficiencies in commercially available software. MassMotion is an autonomous agent system that predicts how people will interact with the built environment. It is a powerful design and communication tool for a broad range of planning, architectural, and engineering applications. ISO 9001:2008 & TickIT Certified
7
Why is it different? All calculations are based on continuous three dimensional model spaces True way-finding through large and complex multi-level environments Discrete event process modelling built in Streamlined scheduling through high-level origin and destination scheduling Massively scalable – 1,000,000 simultaneous agents tested
8
How is it applied? Problem or goal definition – does the project even require the application of simulation tools? Data collection 3D environment development Simulation of specific scenarios relevant to the design criteria Analysis of resulting conditions in test scenarios Sensitivity testing or design iteration and refinement as required
9
Modelling Models can be developed from CAD drawings or built from scratch Translation tools enable import of 3D geometry from AutoCAD, Micro- Station, Revit, and Rhino Geometry is classified as floors, links, barriers, and portals Geometric design changes are automatically incorporated through scene parsing algorithms Pre-flight model validation ensures that setup problems are identified prior to simulation
10
Agent Scheduling MassMotion can handle extremely complicated Origin and Destination (OD) matrices OD matrices can be defined through the user interface or with spreadsheets Agents can be organized according to profiles which define attributes such as speed, size, and tasks Agents can be coloured to correspond with discrete groups or types of occupants
11
Simulation 3D environment is parsed to develop physical relationships between geometric objects Routes between origins and destinations are mapped Agents navigate their way through the environment to their individual destinations Data is collected and exported for analysis
12
Analysis Journey times between origins and destinations or across specific areas for individuals or groups Flow rates for doors, stairs, escalators, or arbitrary user defined cordons Queue lengths for thresholds or accumulations by user defined volumes Density plots for Level of Service including average, experiential, and maximum values Visual review of 3D recording
13
Analysis Egress maps showing locations of escapees at given times Vision maps showing where agents are looking 3D visualization of results
14
Calibration & Validation Rigorous testing using a suite of case studies based on Fruin’s industry standard pedestrian planning and design standards Extensive comparison with surveys of commuter behaviour and route choice patterns Comparative testing with other simulation tools Comparison with real world evacuation scenarios
15
Where has it been applied? Transport Planning & Terminal Design – Union Station – Transbay Terminal – Sydney CBD Metro – TTC Yonge-Spadina Subway Extension – Jetblue Terminal JFK – P.E. Trudeau Airport Fire & Evacuation – Canary Wharf – TTC Subway Stations Venue Planning – Air Canada Centre – Beethoven Festspiel Halle – Hard Rock Hotel & Casino
16
Transport - Union Station Station Revitalization Union Station will double its current passenger volumes by 2021 A complete renovation of the station is being planned with concurrent renovations to the train shed and adjacent subway station More than 35,000 passengers will travel through the station during the busiest 15 minutes of each weekday MassMotion is being used to predict conditions and assess the success of both the final station configuration and the construction phasing
17
Transport - Transbay Terminal San Francisco’s New Regional Hub Complete replacement of the existing facility Multi-modal transit hub including city buses, regional buses, regional rail, and eventually high speed rail Significant transfer volumes within the station Stacked layout with buses above and rail station below grade with retail and passenger circulation concourses in between
18
Retail – Jetblue JFK Airport Shopping Concourse Multiple retail and food concessions Passenger movement and activities tied to airline departure and arrival schedules Agent demand derived from Arena process models of ticketing and security Activities included shopping, loitering, and both restaurant and cafeteria style food ordering and seating
19
Airports – Montreal Trudeau Departures & Security MassMotion incorporates discrete event simulation for the analysis of complex processes Multiple airline check-in Passenger movement and activities tied to airline departure and arrival schedules Activities included kiosk check-in, conditional re-work, and conventional counters
20
Venues – Beethoven Hall Analysis for Design Competition New multi-function concert hall designed by Zaha Hadid Large auditorium with capacity for 1,000 patrons and a small auditorium with capacity for 500 patrons MassMotion was used to analyze the comfort and timing of pre- and post-event patron movement
21
Value Predictive crowd modeling reduces risk in the planning and design of high occupancy facilities MassMotion 3D environments permit rapid iteration and testing of design concepts Diverse range of statistical and graphic output enables clear communication to design team, stakeholders, and the public Integrates well with design tools and processes including 3D BIM
