Prompt Prompt: Analysis of a Literary Character We understand characters in literature by paying attention to what they say, what they do, and how other characters react to them. The author of a novel will help us understand a character by describing how that character reacts in certain situations. Select a character from the play The Tragedy of Macbeth and analyze that character's personality. What adjectives would you choose to describe the character? What information and evidence from the novel supports the use of those adjectives? In a multi-paragraph essay, use adjectives to analyze a character from The Tragedy of Macbeth. Use quotations, details, and examples from the novel to support your selection of adjectives.

Introduction In the play The Tragedy of Macbeth by William Shakespeare, there is a character named Macduff. Macduff is a soldier in Macbeth’s army. He has many traits that are developed throughout the novel with the way he acts and interacts with other characters. Macduff is brave, honest, and patriotic.

Body of the paper One of Macduff’s character traits is that he is brave. It is late in the play when Macduff shows his bravery. He leaves his home to travel to England to get help for his family and others. He realizes that things are not right with the king. “From whence himself does fly? He loves us not; He wants the natural touch: for the poor wren, The most diminutive of birds, will fight, Her young ones in her nest, against the owl." IV. ii. 5-11.

Conclusion In conclusion, Macduff is a valiant soldier that sacrifices everything to save his beloved country. He is a minor character that has a major impact on the plot of the play. Macduff’s actions in the final act help restore Scotland back to the family that belongs in power. It is his characteristics that make reading Macbeth so enjoyable.
