3. BAE SYSTEMS - 21 Jan 04 Action Plan requirements: 1) A security framework accepted and approved by relevant national and international accreditation bodies. This will provide a means by which vendors (software, hardware, middleware, services) can obtain the necessary verification that their product is able to operate at appropriate security levels. This is one area where policies and standards can be driven from outside the software development community. 2) Interoperable data systems. This applies to standardisation bodies outwith the Grid domain – in particular the sector-based standards such as SC4 and OBO. The emergence of Grid is resulting in acceleration of the requirements for data exchange, putting increased pressure on existing data standards, and driving new requirements for extensions into areas such as ontologies. 3) Service business models. Recent attempts to deploy utility computing have largely failed due to complexities related to software licensing and protection. The desire from the end-users to reduce cost and increase efficiency threatens existing licensing models and revenue streams for the capability vendors. A combination of technology, regulation and standardisation is required to produce reliable and trustworthy means for delivery of capability.

4. BAE SYSTEMS - 21 Jan 04 Commercialisation 1.The production of robust and supported middleware. We can expect this to be delivered by Microsoft, IBM et al, and (other than a requirement for standardised and interoperable interfaces) is likely to have significant proprietary content. 2.The commercialisation of the Grid-enabled processes. This area is fundamentally important, and one in which all stakeholders have an interest, and hence where collaboration is essential. This is also the area in which an authoritative EU Action Plan can have most impact. Key deliverables fall into three categories: a.A dynamically configurable IT infrastructure built around delivery of capability-as-service. b.Interoperable data systems to permit the rapid and controllable interchange of data. c.Service provision business models to ensure that capability vendors have motivation, and trustworthy mechanisms, to deliver their services.
