1 Percent Carbon on Platformer Catalyst by Volumetric Procedure CAUTION: Furnace tube is extremely hot! 1 Check system for leaks: a.Turn valve towards back. b.Place bottle in lowest position possible. c.Insert stopper into open end of furnace tube. d.Raise bottle and place in upper rack. e.Observe pink confining solution liquid in calibrated column. If liquid… Then… rises and then stops system is free of leaks. continues to rise & does not stop within 30 seconds check seal of stopper in tube. If liquid still rises replace furnace tube & repeat leak test. 2 Weigh samples into ceramic boats: If sample is… Weigh out LE1, LE2 0.100 g Regen 1.000 g 3Ensure valve is turned towards back (closed). 4Using tongs, place boat in end of furnace tube. 5Turn on main valve for oxygen (gauge should read approximately 20 psi). 6Use rod to slide boat into center region of tube. 7Stopper open end of furnace tube. 8Open needle valve for oxygen (turning slowly) to purge sample. 9Observe confining solution in column – when it reaches black line in reservoir, immediately close needle valve for oxygen. 10Place bottle on lower rack. NOTE: Boat may be removed at this point with hooked rod. Pull boat carefully until reaches end of tube. 16Lower bottle and simultaneously turn valve back to left position. 17Continue lowering bottle until glass float in KOH reservoir locks then return valve to rear (closed) position. 18Place bottle on lower rack and wait for liquid in column to stop rising. 19Raise bottle slowly until liquid level in column is even with liquid level in bottle. 20Record reading from calibrated column to 2 decimal places. 21Turn valve to left (open) position to vent gas. 22Ensure glass float locks in confining solution reservoir. 23Remove boat from end of furnace tube with tongs and place on ceramic block in tray. 24Shut off oxygen valve.  Procedure Completed Date: Prepared By: Approved By:
