3. 4 Categories in Healthcare Careers 1. Therapeutic: Hands-on involvement in patient care related to the treatment of and healing process in an illness or disease. Ex: Nurses, Doctors, Physical therapists 2. Diagnostic: Help to “diagnose” patients’ illness or disease. Ex: Radiology Technician, Phlebotomist

4. 4 Categories (con’t.) 3. Information Services: Maintains patient’s healthcare information or education. Ex: Health Educator, Admitting Clerk, Medical Records Technician 4. Environmental Services: Maintains the patient’s environment. Ex: Dietician, Housekeeping Staff, Sterile Supply staff

6. Certified or Registered? Or Licensed? Certification: person meets educational and performance standards set by an agency governing that career. A certificate is issued by agency deeming that person is “certified” to work in that field Ex: Certified Medical Technician (CMT) Registered: Person has fulfilled educational requirements and has passed a state board exam and is then “registered” (or added to the list) by that state to work in a career. Ex: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT), Registered Nurses (RN)

7. Certified or Registered…(con’t.) Licensed: A person is licensed when they have met educational requirements, have passed state board exam, and is registered by the state. They also maintain certain standards set by a governing agency and issues a renewable “license” to practice in their field. Ex: Medical Doctor (MD), Registered Nurse (RN), Dentist (DMD), Physical Therapist (PT)

8. Education…How Much? Educational requirements vary depending on what the career. Health Occupation Education: Programs usually last anywhere from 6 weeks to several months depending on institution offering program. Associates Degree: 2 year college degree. Bachelors Degree: 4 year college degree.

9. Education… (con’t) Masters Degree: Bachelors Degree plus 1 to 2 more years of study based on field and program requirements. Doctorate Degree: Bachelors Degree + Masters Degree + at least 2 more years of study.
