❖ All students entering 9th grade, whether taking Accelerated or Honors Survey of Literature, must read TWO books from the choice list provided. ❖ Review the choice books and their descriptions and select books that are interesting to you! How many books do I have to read?
5
❖ The Hunger Games series ❖ Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief AND The Sea of Monsters ❖ Jodi Picoult’s My Sister’s Keeper and The Pact ❖ Prom by Laurie Anderson ❖...AND MORE!!! Popular Book Choices
6
Your Summer Reading selections will help you MAKE CONNECTIONS to the literature we read in Survey of Literature! Prepare to read The Odyssey, Romeo and Juliet, To Kill a Mockingbird, and more!
7
❖ All students must complete three Reading Logs for each book; therefore, each student will turn in SIX Reading Logs on the first day of school. ❖ Divide each book into thirds, and complete a Reading Log for each section. Reading Logs
9
Reading Logs- FIVE EVENTS
10
❖ Students must provide a DETAILED SUMMARY of the main events in each section of the books. ❖ Do not just list the five events, provide thorough explanations for each! Reading Logs- FIVE EVENTS
11
1.Katniss likes to hunt. 2.Katniss is going to be a tribute for the games. This section should include a more detailed summary of events... Reading Logs: POOR Event Examples
12
1.The exposition of the novel begins on the day of the reaping in District 12; each district is forced by the Capitol (government) to select tributes for The Hunger Games. Katniss and her best friend Gale are hunting before the reaping. 2.Against all odds, Prim Everdeen is selected at the reaping, but her older sister Katniss volunteers to be the female tribute in her place. Peeta Mellark is selected as the male tribute. 3.Events continued... Reading Logs: GOOD EVENT EXAMPLES
13
Reading Logs- FIVE WONDERINGS
14
❖ Reflect on the main ideas in each section. ❖ What BIG QUESTIONS or IDEAS come to mind that need clarification? ❖ What PREDICTIONS can you make? Reading Logs- FIVE WONDERINGS
15
Bad vs. Good examples based on The Hunger Games: ❖ BAD- “Why does Peeta do that?” ❖ GOOD- “Why does Peeta make his crush on Katniss public? Is he looking out for himself or for Katniss? I think that his feelings are true, but does Katniss return his affections, and what about Gale? Reading Logs: WONDERINGS- EXAMPLES
16
Reading Logs- IMPORTANT PASSAGES
17
❖ What passages stood out to you while reading?... ❖ What passages were interesting, funny, thought-provoking, or puzzling?... ❖ Reference these passages and MAKE PERSONAL CONNECTIONS to real life, film, TV, literature, etc. ❖ Make sure to include page numbers! Reading Logs- IMPORTANT PASSAGES
18
“You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope.” I never forget a face I see!! Notice there is NO page number, character name, and no real explanation or personal connection to the quote. The quote should be explained and then also a connection should be made. Reading Logs: Important Passages: BAD Example
19
“You don’t forget the face of the person who was your last hope.” Katniss Everdeen, Pg 85 I think the emphasis is on the word “last”. This person is your last hope- you're putting everything into them, in the hopes that, maybe, just maybe, you'll come out victorious. They're what you dream about when you're trying to look towards the upside of your unfortunate situation. This reminds me of when I focus on doing everything for my Grandma’s memory when things get difficult, whether it is sports or school. Reading Logs: Important Passage GOOD Example
