Katniss is an archer, and she uses her bow and arrow to survive. She learned this skill from her dad, and it helps her provide food for herself while in the arena. She also uses the bow and arrow to prove a point when she shot at the sponsors during her training.

Katniss and Peta try to outsmart the game makers at the end of the novel. Neither of them wanted the other to die, so they were both going to go out together by eating the poisonous berries. Right after this, the game makers made the last-minute decision to let them both live.

Children ages 12-18 were required to be part of the reaping. Some kids, like the tributes, trained their whole lives for The Hunger Games, while poorer districts, who never won the Games, often sent underqualified and under-skilled kids into the games. Katniss volunteered to take her 12-year-old sister’s place.

Katniss was doubtful that she’d win The Hunger Games because she was not a trained fighter like some of the Tributes. She was also doubtful that Peeta would be loyal to her when she saw him walking around with some of the Tributes, who were trying to hunt her.
