2  Volunteer Host Families provide an extended family experience by providing regular overnight care in their home for a child with a disability. Our Model

3  The model is ‘resource intense’ to set-up o Volunteer Assessment o Child Safe Environments Framework o Volunteer Training o Compliance Requirements o Matching process  As the match progresses o consumer direction increases o Interchange plays a supportive role Our Model Continued

4  A safe and nurturing environment for a child  Extended social networks to be with people who choose to spend time with you  Fun and Friendship  Learning in real environments  Building confidence and resilience  A regular break for the family Outcomes

5  Established in the mid ‘80’s by families who wanted an alternative to the centre based respite.  Based on similar models already well established in Victoria  Government funded, based on success of the model How Have We Made It Happen

6  A model about a ‘real relationship’ and an opportunity for friendship  Volunteer versus paid worker  A model of service which empowers  Creates a natural support for families  Works in partnership with families and volunteers  Good value for money What makes the model innovative?

7 Evidence:  Service spanning 3 decades.  Long lasting friendships have developed and continue.  Roughly 40% remain connected after formal match ends.  Feedback from families, young people and volunteers – what it has meant to them. How do we know it is innovative?
