2 Franklin D Roosevelt 1882-1945 Served as President from 1933-1945. “Can-do” approach which appealed to people. He promised a “new deal” to the American people.

3 The New Deal Program designed to alleviate the problems of the Great Depression Focused on 3 goals: relief for the needy, economic recovery and financial reform. “Hundred Days” Congress passed more than 15 major pieces of legislation

4 Fireside Chats Radio talks Roosevelt gave to boost confidence in the Government Informal and relaxed

5 Banking Reorganize the banking system Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation- provided federal insurance for individual bank accounts Federal Securities Act- required corporations to provide information on all stock offerings.

6 Helping People Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)- raised crop prices by lowering production Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)-put young men ages 18-25 to work building roads and developing parks. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) built dams and power plants helping to improve the living conditions of the South.

8 The Second New Deal 1935 Problems addressed were for the elderly, the poor and unemployed.

9 Social Security Act (SSA) Most popular of the New Deal Created a pension system for the elderly, established unemployment insurance for workers and provided aid for poverty stricken mothers, children, blind and the disabled. Did not apply to domestics or farm workers.

10 Challenges to New Deal Critics said the it gave too much power to the government thereby limiting free enterprise and individual freedoms. Others said it was overly concerned with helping the banks and businesses and not enough to help the poor. During the second New Deal, the Supreme Court ruled some programs unconstitutional

11 Effects of the New Deal Women did not always benefit from the programs like the CCC. Roosevelt also did not support anti- lynching legislation so as not to lose support in the South. African Americans were also paid less than white workers.

12 Con’t. The role of government expands in the economy Created a welfare state in which the government assumes responsibility for providing for the welfare of children, poor, sick, disabled and unemployed.
