Exploration and Settlement of South Carolina
Europeans came to the Americas to explore new lands and find riches. They met Native Americans in villages across South Carolina.

What is an Explorer? An explorer is a traveler who searches for new places Spain, France, and England all sent explorers to North and South America Long ago, people in Europe traded with people in Asia for silk, spices, and other goods. The trip from Europe to Asia by land was hard. To get there by sea, ships had to sail all the way around Africa.

Christopher Columbus A European Explorer who was given money in 1492 to try to find an easier way to Asia. Instead he landed on an island off the coast of North America.

For King and Country! Explorers claimed land in honor of their king and their country. They came to the Americas to find gold and new land.

Hernando de Soto From Spain
Marched across Florida and Georgia before crossing the Savannah River into South Carolina De Soto and his men were the first Europeans to see the Mississippi River. De Soto died of fever on May 21, 1542 on the way to Mexico

Hernando de Soto & Native Americans
In 1540 Hernando de Soto and his crew traveled through South Carolina. They came to a town called Cofitachequi. They were greeted by the leader of the town, the Lady of Cofitachequi. She gave de Soto pearls as a welcome gift. Hernando captured the leader. He thought if she were his prisoner, other Native Americans would not attack. He made her guide them through the land. She was able to escape and return later.

William Hilton From England Sailed from Barbados to Port Royal Hilton Head, an island off the coast of South Carolina, was founded in 1663 by Captain William Hilton, who named the island after himself.

It became the center of trade for the SC colony Low country farmers grew crops They needed: corn, beans, carrots, potatoes To sell in England: sugarcane, rice, indigo

Nickname – Eliza Father went to military and left Eliza in charge of the plantation Even at 16 years old she did a good job managing the farm

Slavery in SC Slavery – the practice of owning people as property and forcing them to work Plantations – large farms Cash Crops – crops that are grown to be sold

Plantations needed many workers because they grew cash crops Plantation owners bought slaves to work the land Many slaves were forced to work hours a day, 6 days a week
