K. Long, 14 October 2003 MICE-UK: progress report Progress: WP1: B&I: Target u/g (Sheffield) … PD Focus coil assembly Spectrometer Software Issues: Scientific approval Formal connections with iMICE Continuity of funding Scenarios for UK funding for MICE

WP2: Focus coil assembly - Oxford/RAL New design of magnet and absorber Absorber now slides inside magnet Integration much easier More modular for hydrogen safety Simplified magnet design Reduces costs Quench analysis complete Magnet specifications written, guide prices from companies and Oxford University. Ongoing analysis of forces Preparing for iMICE safety review (Dec03) Current design simplified integration

WP2: Focus coil assembly Magnetic Analyses OPERA calculations Forces, torques and stresses on coils Quench analysis Currents, forces and heating

WP2: Focus coil assembly Mechanical Analysis ~ 200 tons internal force between coils ~ 80 tons external 2D & 3D FEA analyses of coil support tube

WP2: Focus coil assembly Simulations ICOOL simulation of muons in MICE lattice Specify construction tolerances & magnetic field errors Perfect 5 o tilt

WP3: Spectrometer instrument n - Brunel, Edinburgh, Imperial, Liverpool Prototype: All three stations shipped to FNAL

WP3: Spectrometer instrument n - KEK, Osaka Lightguides: All lightguides shipped to FNAL

WP3: Spectrometer instrument n - FNAL D0 test stand: Trigger etc. ready, assembly in progress RF test done: effect << 1 pe (i.e. OK for MICE)

WP3: Spectrometer instrument n Preparations for technology choice 30Oct-02Nov: Have proved construction/collaboration Jp/UK/US Setting up to measure light yield, cross talk etc. RF measurement performed Tight but possible! Updated costing: Mechanical: revised costing ~prepared. Shows saving and is based on experience with prototype A. Bross (FNAL) updating electronics costing: ‘Borrow’ D0 spares? Implies negotiation with D0 … Build new VLPC cassettes … cost being evaluated Schedule: Mechanical: revised following experience with prototype Electronics: being revised by A. Bross (D0 experience)

WP4: MICE software Present focus: simulation/reconstruction adequate for comparison of SciFi and TPG Gridification: Done: Rapid generation of large data sets RF background generator: under test SciFi simulation: updated: under test SciFi reconstruction: updated: under test Schedule to provide results for collaboration meeting is tight … but probably will be met - Brunel, Edinburgh, Imperial

Issues Scientific approval Discussions with Dan Kaplan and Alain Blondel: Need clear statement such as: … The MICE project has been fully peer reviewed at both national and international level. The science case has been strongly endorsed in each peer-review process. CCLRC therefore approves the project subject to a satisfactory outcome of the Gateway process. …

Issues: Formal connections with iMICE: Collaboration meeting: Initiate dialogue CCLRC/iMICE at collaboration board Informal dialogue UK funding agency/iMICE at collaboration dinner … precursor to more formal meeting? Project Management Board (chair KJP) Has not yet met … Membership is UK leadership plus iMICE spokesperson(s) Important to hold first meeting to tie iMICE into development of financial, managerial and operational cases/activities

Issues: Continuity of funding: Seed-corn funding provided by CCLRC/PPARC following PPRP review have allowed significant progress to be made on all fronts Essential to ensure continuity 2003/04  2004/05 2006/07  2008/09 … i.e. beyond the SR2002 period Sources: OST: £7.5M (via Gateway) PPARC: £2.5M (‘penciled in’) CCLRC: ?

Issues: £21M PSI replacement + contribution to experiment £7.5M PSI Infrastructure contribution to experiment <7.0MQuads 7.5M+Tracker 10M +F.Coils (1.5?) +FC Cryo (0.3?) 11.5MPSI +PSI Cryo 12.5M+Beam Line Coils ? UK Unresolved MICE Items: RF£2M+vat… Track Sol1.5M+? Cryogenics£1M + Extra Design ? Beam Line Coils £1M? ~1M* Saves ~700k - does this include vat & contingency? ~2M* ~0.5M* ~1M* ~0.5M* ~1M* UK loses: DAQ & S’Ware ~2.1M Travel ~0.9M Consumables ~0.3M Misc ~0.3M (RF ~1.6M)** * = vat + contingency – no inflation ** this is ~0.6M above UK commitment in proposal
