Student data privacy and Security continues to be high risk for Schools
The amount of student data, applications and digital devices (the coming “tsunami”) continues to grow at accelerated rates Schools, educators and Education Tech companies are at high risk for student data breaches; nearly 800 since 2005 and continuing to rise Educators and IT organizations have limited knowledge of how data is being used and generated by applications and are ill prepared for FOIA requests Schools have significant legal obligations for ensuring proper management and protection of student data and themselves (Colorado House Bill ) Education Tech Companies receive a great deal of student data, but the majority say little or nothing about data breaches, data deletion, or the fate of student information in the event of a merger or bankruptcy

Congressman Jared Polis on protecting Student data
“The status quo surrounding the protection of our student’s data is entirely unacceptable. It’s like the Wild Wild West – there are few regulations protecting student’s privacy and parental rights, and the ones that do exist were written in an age before smartphones and tablets. Our bipartisan bill is a much-needed first step in providing a framework that can address these concerns of parents and educators while at the same time allowing for the promise of education technology to transform our schools.” - Congressman Jared Polis

Educations resources and instruction
Educational resources have tremendous benefits, but can create challenges if not implemented properly with Student Identity and Data management Erosion of instructional time – over 2 months of a 9 month academic term is spent on accessing digital/online educational resources Lack of student engagement – Students not able to participate due to technology issues such as forgotten passwords, knowing where to go, new students Teacher productivity – Teachers spending valuable preparation and instructional time on extracting, updating, loading data such as rosters to get a view of where students are in their learning progression Teacher choice – Often teachers are not enabled to use the best instructional resources for their students due to technology restrictions or vendor lock in Costly - Significant time and cost to bring privacy enabled and secure applications into the classroom Lack of processes and tools - No pathway or process to bring in applications rapidly while preserving compliance with school data use policies

21st Century Classroom High risk of personal data exposure!
With so many apps, I spend hours collecting data for understanding my students’ needs. New student, Sally, is browsing Facebook because her account’s are not created yet. Mr. Smith! My password doesn’t work! I can’t believe we’re waiting for Jimmy again, I wish he would remember his password. Mr. Smith, I can’t find that web link... Where am I suppose to go? The 21st Century Classroom requires rapid adoption of digital technologies
