Walk Around the Vehicle
Note any scratches, dents, missing items, or any other items that are currently wrong with the car. This will protect us from later accusations and to note for possible repair.

Brake System Check Make sure the car doesn’t pull left or right dip the front or rear – might indicate a brake problem Should be about an inch of free pedal at the top Should not be any pulsation in the pedal Put light pressure on the pedal (engine off) if the pedal sinks, it indicates an internal leak in the master cylinder Should be about two inches of reserve pedal at the bottom of the brake travel

Check Fluid Level

Brake Pads Inspection If you can see the linings try to determine how much disc pad is left. This job is usually done with the vehicle is on the lift for under-car inspection (next chapter) Sometimes you can see the brake rotor and linings through the rim

Steering Check While driving – the steering wheel should not have more than one inch of free movement. Check for binding or popping sounds (still) No more than 1 inch of free movement

Power Steering Fluid Check

Check Air Filter Hold it up to the light, if you see light
through it- then it’s generally good to use over.

Coolant System Check The cooling system is under pressure and is extremely hot. Use safety equipment when working with the coolant system.

Hoses Heater core Engine block and freeze plugs Water pump Reservoir Thermostat

Clean corrosion with terminal cleaner or a solution of baking soda and water.

Loose clamps Cracks in case Wetness on or around battery (could indicate acid) Visual battery eye

External Lighting Check all lights Head lights, high and low beam
Running lights Turn signals, key on Brake/stop lights Hazards/emergency License plate lights
